Virtual Christmas Enterprise Markets 2020

Our Christmas markets looked a little different this year! Students had to get a little more creative and submit their business plans and photos of their prototype online. With the help of our Web Developer we were able to create an online virtual shop where we then asked students to vote over a week for their favourite product.

After over a 1000 votes – the votes were finally in for the winners of the Christmas Enterprise markets 2020!!

1st place – Covid Fighters with their festive themed corona kit

2nd place – Bundles of Joy selling Christmas hampers

3rd place – Avery Bites selling collectable macaroons

Well done, to all who took part. We were amazed at the creativeness of the entries submitted.

Mrs Kirby, Mrs Gillibrand and Mrs Thorp

Please take a moment and browse the shop here, voting has ended but products are still on display

We would like to get as many votes as possible, but, you will need to hurry as the shop is open for a limited time only and will close on Tuesday 15th December at 3.30PM.

Each person has up to a maximum of three votes for their favourite products. We hope to announce the winners next Thursday 17th December.

Remember this year you aren’t actually able to buy the products; instead we will be celebrating the enterprise skills of our amazing AGGS students.

CyberFirst Girls Semi Finals

Following on from their tremendous success in the qualifying round, AGGS had very safely qualified to bring a team (Rachael E, Eloise F, Roselynn G, Sophie H) to the Semi Finals of the National CyberSecurity Centre’s (NCSC) competition; CyberFirst Girls (Year 8).

They certainly gave all of the other schools in that region a lot of moments of panic when our team shot up the leader board to first place and maintaining a consistent placement in the top 10! Overall coming out second place at this location which is a tremendous achievement! The girls were an absolute credit to the school and to themselves in tackling challenges which not only were at industry and degree level but also stumping the industry helpers from PwC!

It was very clear this has sparked a life long interest in Cyber Security and we look forward to seeing their next achievements when they progress onto the CyberDiscovery challenges next year!

A massive well done and heartfelt congratulations from Mr Starnes and a special thanks for support to Y13 helpers Bex W and Amelia E-W.

Enterprise Competition Success

We are delighted to announce that two teams of Year 12 students have had success in an Enterprise Competition which has gained them each an individual prize of a £50 Amazon voucher as well as a cheque for £1,000 for the school.

The two teams were placed joint second in the Together Enterprise Challenge which was open to students aged 15-18 from schools across the North West. The competition was launched in September by the Enterprise Department of Mrs Gillibrand and Ms Kirby and since then the students have been working on their plan.

They had to prepare a Business Plan to win the backing of the judges who were the CEO and three senior directors of Together Financial Services in Cheadle.

The challenge for our students was to come up with a business idea, and to create a business plan, including funding and budgeting which our judges had already seen prior to the event. They also had to create a presentation to sell their ideas to our judges in an elevator pitch.

At the finals on 29th January our teams gave wonderful presentations on their ideas and were highly commended for their originality by the judges. One team, CineDrive, produced an excellent pitch for a drive-in cinema with a difference which was both creative and highly detailed.

Our other team, Blessed, produced a care pack of essential products, such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, for the homeless population in Manchester so that they could improve their well-being. This idea so resonated with the Directors at Together that they came up with a challenge for the team which was that they would donate £1,000 from their own Charity Day if our students could turn their idea into reality.

In true Alty girl spirit, the two teams have agreed to collaborate in this venture to turn a business concept into reality. They will jointly source the packs of essential items using the £1,000 donation which will then be distributed to those most in need in partnership with a local charity who work with Manchester’s homeless.

A wonderful example of the benefits of Enterprise where everyone benefits, congratulations to all the students on their ongoing work!

Siemens Rollercoaster Finals at Whitworth Art Gallery

On Tuesday 18 June 2 teams of Year 10s went to the Siemens Rollercoaster finals at Whitworth Art Gallery to compete against other schools with their design and construction of a rollercoaster using a rollercoaster K’Nex kit. The students have been working very hard on their designs and testing their workings since April, meeting at lunchtimes and after school as well as capturing their experiences and keeping a portfolio which also went towards the final judging criteria. The students had to pitch their design and demonstrate the workings of their rollercoasters to a panel of judges. The theme of the rollercoasters was Aladdin and Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, with Aladdin winning the prize for Team Choice, which was the vote from every school for their favourite rollercoaster of the day. The overall winner of the day was from Ormiston, Chadwick Academy for their Jurassic Park rollercoaster display. Well done to the 2 teams: Aladdin – Samyu, Lavanya, Isabelle, Emma and Eleanor and to Charlie and The Chocolate Factory – Ella R, Amy, Grace, Malaika, Ella and Susie.
