Congratulationsto Illuminate Online – winners of the Entrepreneursof the Year Award! The Illuminate team Rose, Orla, Ibby & Amy were nominated for the UKFast Young Entrepreneur’s of the Year award for inventing an anti Cyber Bullying website which is now up and running: https://illuminateonline.co.uk/
The award is well deserved, its the culmination of 2 years hard work in developing their online anti Cyber Bullying website with the support of UKFast.
Year 12 have just completed their week’s work experience in industry. Work experience placements serve multiple purposes, including experience of the world of work, employability skill development and experience to help guide future career decision-making.
Some of the companies who hosted Y12 were HSBC Bank, BNY Mellon, NHS, Unilever and UKFast. We have received some excellent employer feedback commenting on their punctuality, reliability and keenness to learn more about the company. The students faced new challenges and learnt things about themselves that they didn’t know before.
Mrs Walker and Mrs Gillibrand along with two of our Y12 Digital Leaders Rebecca and Ojas were privileged to have been invited last Wednesday 1 May to UKFast to share their celebrations in being awarded The Princess Royal Training Award 2019. Subsequent to receiving the award, HRH Princess Anne wanted to visit the UKFast campus to learn more about their culture and work within education.
As education partners of UKFast, Mrs Walker and Mrs Gillibrand, along with other schools and colleges, were honoured to meet The Princess Royal, who was very charming, interested and knowledgeable about the education sector.
The two Digital Leaders were involved in a classroom activity learning about the components of a server and coding. They also had the opportunity to talk to Princess Anne and show her what they were involved in doing. The Lord Lieutenant, High Sherriff and Lord Mayor of Greater Manchester were also there and were impressed by our Digital Leaders. It was a memorable opportunity and we had a thoroughly enjoyable morning followed by lunch there.
UKFast provide work experience for our Year 12 students, support the careers convention and provide workplace visits for our computing students. Gail Jones, Managing Director of UKFast, is also one of our Alumnae and came back into school last year for our Year 8 world of work day to talk about her career route since leaving AGGS. UKFast have also been key in supporting and implementing our new Blog system and have also been involved in helping our group of four Y10 students, Illuminate, in getting their cyber-bullying App up and running and ready to launch to the wider community next month.
GCSE Computing students visited UKFast this term to experience working life in a multi-award winning digital business. It’s a business renowned for its innovation and fun culture as well as being one of the UK’s leading cloud hosting and colocation firms. UKFast was launched and founded in a back bedroom in 1999 by Lawrence and Gail Jones (Gail is a former AGGS student).
The visit involved a tour of their state of the art office and gave career tips and ideas from experts to help our students prepare a career for the future. UKFast are always looking for talent and they want to encourage more females into their business. They offer work experience placements and a number of Year 10’s are hoping to get the chance to experience working there.
And of course they had the chance to go down the infamous UKFast slide!
The Y8 students from Illuminateonlione, Rose, Amy, Orla and Ibby visited UK Fast again last week. The platform for the anti-bullying website has now been set up and they are now designing the layout of the site. They have their next planning meeting after half term and they are looking forward to meeting Gail Jones, co-owner of UKFast and a former AGGS student. We would like to thank UKFast for all their support especially Aaron Saxton.
Last Friday the members of Illuminate; Orla, Ibby, Rose and Amy (8-6) visited UKFast in Manchester to find out if it would be possible to bring Illuminate – their cyberbullying support website to life.
Aaron Saxton (Director of Training and Learning) gave us a tour of the premises and explained how UKFast has become one of the UK’s leading managed hosting and colocation providers to some of Britain’s best-loved brands. We even had the opportunity to meet Lawrence Jones again (Co-owner of UKFast) who showed us around his office and expressed how enthusiastic he is about the project. One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity to have a go on the slide!
