Dissection Masterclass-Biology Week
As an after school treat to lucky pupils, Ms Hulme delivered an expert tutorial on how to carry out a rat dissection this Biology Week.
The students were shown the various scientific names and the ‘ratonomy'(rat anatomy). They were also taught the reasons for carrying out the dissection in a specific order.
After carefully observing Ms Hulme’s steady demonstration, the students partnered up and followed suit.
All pupils present demonstrated skill and nerve as they took turns to dissect and identify different body parts of the rat, and were amazed at the similarities in the organs between humans and rats! One student observed the kidney of the rat to be of the same size as the appropriately named kidney bean, but agreed it looked much less appetising.
Though the workshop was not for the faint-hearted, all students who signed up found the experience to be extremely informative, and it may have also sparked an interest in some students to study biology further!
