On Thursday 15 November, Sonja and Leo from Manchester University visited school to give a series of talks on the importance of language learning. Pupils were surprised to learn that only 6% of the world’s population are native speakers of English and that 75% speak no English at all. This highlighted the importance of being able to communicate in other languages. The top 3 languages sought by UK businesses are French, German and Spanish. We looked at the variety of careers accessible to linguists, which included media, marketing, retail, law as well as teaching and translating. More importantly than this, learning languages is fun. We enjoyed finding about how animal noises are different in different languages. Pupils also found out about the variety of options available for studying abroad as part of a languages degree.
