If AGGS were to enter Eurovision this year, it would be safe to say any of the Year 8’s performances would have blown the competition away. With seven forms, three classes of Year 12’s and even a surprise show from the MFL department- AGGS Eurovision 2018 was certainly unforgettable.
Here’s a run down of the songs sung by each form and the country they represented-
8-1 Country: France, Song: Je Veux by singer Zaz, Highlights: Colour co-ordination of clothes to represent the French flag, featured saxophones and no backing track!
8-2 Country: Spain, Song: La Cintura by Alvaro Soler, Highlights: Vibrant summer outfits, amazing choreography.
8-3Country: Canary Islands, Song: Solo Si Es Contigo by Bombai, Highlights: Hawaiian outfits, featured talented guitarists.
8-4 Country: Germany, Song: Wenn sie tanzt, Maz Giesinger, Highlights: another form whose outfits matched the colours of the flag, a brilliant conga line mid-performance through the audience!
8-5 Country: Belgium, Song: Color Gitano by Kendji Girac, Highlights: featured various percussion instruments, bright clothes mirroring the lovely (ish) summer weather we have had recently
8-6 Country: Balearic Islands, Song: Yo Contigo, Tu Conmigo by Morat and Alvaro Soler, Highlights: danced in pairs with matching outfits
8-7 Country: Austria, Song: Das Fliegerlied by DONIKKL, Highlights: animal onesies!
It was a close competition between the whole year as each form brought a distinct feature. 8-7’s cute animal onesies and 8-3’s vibrant hula skirts definitely added to the performances featuring inflatable flamingo rubber dingys, catchy songs and synchronised dance moves. Eurovision this year had it all!
In the midst of all the Year 8 performances, the audience were lucky to experience Year 12 students singing iconic English songs in French, Spanish and German. The French group sang ‘Uptown Funk’, Spanish sang ‘Mamma Mia’ and German sang ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’. With brilliant singing and cool costumes, the audience were all eager to join in and clapped along!
The MFL department surprised everybody by combining their linguistic skills to sing (much to everyone’s enjoyment) ’99 Luftballoons’/ ’99 Red Balloons’. Starting with Mrs Crowson’s solo, featuring a single red star shaped balloon. Mrs Stokes, Miss Benson, Mr Butterworth, Mrs Ryan, Mrs McIntosh, Mrs Herbert, Mrs Bond, and Miss Demeur soon all joined in with their oversized red retro glasses, inflatable rock guitars and a mind-blowing amount of enthusiasm. Sixth Formers scattered red balloons from the balcony to signify the end of yet another fun- filled Eurovision.
And the winner of Eurovision 2018 (drum roll please) was….
8-5! The form representing Belgium impressed the judges with their flexible dance routine and singing in not only one language…but two! They combined both French and Spanish and included 2 live musicians with a guitar and ukulele. Congratulations!

Year 8 successfully went on the geography department trip to Llandudno this week. They completed fieldwork on the positive and negative effects of tourism in Llandudno and learnt about coastal processes. The students enjoyed Llandudno in the sun on Tuesday and torrential rain on Wednesday, but were excellent in their conduct and enthusiasm despite the weather!
Rachel G in Year 8 won third prize in the 2018 MEM Challenge Competition (Mathematical Education on Merseyside). Rachel has been invited to attend a prize-giving cermony at the University of Liverpool on the 9th of May.
On Thursday, 3rd May we held our second World of Work (WoW) Day for our Year 8 students. We invited in 10 of our alumnae to deliver a series of talks on what they have done since leaving AGGS.
The aim of the day was to open the students up to an array of different careers and opportunities on offer after they leave school and to think about the different skills needed. Assemblies and form time sessions were delivered over the week to help them to think about what skills they already have, and how they can develop and build upon these skills in and out of school for their future careers.
“We are currently preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist . . . using technologies that haven’t been invented . . . in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems yet.”
Thank you to all of our alumnae volunteers for giving up their time to help us with this day. It is always lovely to welcome back our former students; current AGGS students thoroughly enjoyed hearing from those who were once in their shoes.
Just got home from hockey practice with the AGGS junior teams. Over 50 students turned up tonight to celebrate the end of the season with a fancy dress training session.
Coaches Mrs “Tigger” Hardicre and Mrs “Dinosaur” Reynolds were joined by the year 7 zebras, year 8 hoodies and balloons and the year 9 swimmers.
Each year group was split into four teams and we had ourselves a mini round robin tournament followed by a penalty shuffle.
Well done to teams “Im Not Sure” , “Shrek” and “The Best” for taking part and to our winners – team “Just Add Water”.

On Monday year 8 had a session in the hall with the fantastic youth workers from Brook. The session considered and explored Gender Identity allowing students to engage in productive discussion about the issue and learn different terminologies and the importance of respecting others. The session also explored sexuality and the dangers of homophobia and transphobia and how this can make a person feel. The session was fantastic and year 8 seemed to gain a great deal from the activities and discussions.
This week, 75 students in years 7 to 9 undertook their LAMDA examinations at school over two days. Depending on the year group, students did grade 3, 4 or 5. They were expected to perform a piece of prose and poetry to the examiner and had to answer theoretical questions about both texts.
Well done to all involved – we shall find out the results in September!
On Thursday 70 year 8 students spent the day as engineers. They first learnt about how our growing human population means non-renewable resources will run out and we need to think of creative ways to generate enough energy without impacting any more on the environment. They used the knowledge they had gained to recommend a source of energy for a particular country. Then in teams they spent time building and charging a solar powered car with which to race against the other teams. This took much alteration of the components and design for it to work effectively and they showed great teamwork skills. At the end of the day the winning teams’ car went so far it had to be turned round at the end of the racetrack! The students involved had a great time and we hope they may be inspired to think about engineering as a future career.
