Manchester University Open Days

You can register here.  Such visits are a great opportunity for students to explore different institutions as well as having the chance to find out more about their chosen courses.

Our work aims to support and add value to yours in providing information, advice and guidance in schools and colleges across the UK.  I would like to remind you of the opportunity for your students to join The University of Manchester Aspiring Students’ Society (UMASS). UMASS is a fantastic initiative which provides students in Year 12 and 13 with a unique insight into university life.  Students joining UMASS enjoy a range of privileges including online support via our website, podcasts, blogs and a monthly e-newsletter.  In addition, students living within traveling distance of Manchester have the opportunity to attend workshops on our campus covering topics such as writing personal statements, preparing for university interviews, taster lectures, revision sessions and one-to-one guidance sessions. Places at the event will be determined by completion of the application form, (at the bottom of the attached document)  and successful individuals will be invited. While all Year 12 A Level students can enter, a number of places will be reserved for students from Widening Participation (WP) backgrounds.  The deadline is now 21st July.

NHS Young People’s Event

Young People’s Event

Each year (around June) the Membership Team hosts a Young People’s Open Day.  Over the years, around 2,550 young people with their teachers, friends and parents have attended and not only gained an insight into our organisation, but also discovered more about career opportunities in the NHS, volunteering and work experience in our hospitals in addition to receiving health and well-being advice from our health experts. Young People’s Event 2017 – Tuesday 27th June

Our eighth annual interactive Open Day will be held on:

  • Tuesday 27th June 2017 from 10.00am to 3.00pm in the Nowgen Centre, Grafton Street, M13 9WU (near Manchester Royal Infirmary). Click here for directions.

As well as stands covering NHS careers ranging from Nursing and Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Cancer Care, Medical Photography, Medical Engineering, IT and many more, there will also be brand new stands for 2017.  These include Children & Young People’s Nursing Education, Radiology, Cardiac Physiology, Vascular and Urgent Care Medicine.

Popular interactive sessions this year include learning how to do CPR (basic resuscitation), accident prevention, beating the bugs that can cause serious infections, using microscopes to identify cells, checking blood pressure and finding out more about diseases of the circulation, including veins and arteries.

Delegates can also get plenty of information and advice about looking after their mental and emotional health, dental and eye care and healthy eating, as well as finding out about how to become a volunteer in our hospitals or join our Youth Forum.

Attendees can also participate in the popular interactive activities provided by our plastering team!

We are also keen to hear views about health services for young people, and encourage young people to get more involved by becoming members of our Foundation Trust. Our Membership Team and Governors (membership representatives) will be available to talk to attendees about the benefits of being a young member.

Interested in a career in medicine? Ethical scenarios form a big part of the interview process and also constantly crop up through medical training and your career. This workshop will give you the opportunity to get to grips with clinical, ethical questions with guidance from medical students.

 LMEA Medicine Summer School (non-residential)

Interested in a career in medicine? The Leeds School of Medicine Summer School is delivered by current medical students. Each day focuses on a topic ranging from paediatrics, primary care and public health, to basic life support, acute medicine, cancer care and end of life decisions. The diverse and important range of subjects are taught using case discussions and actively involves students through task based learning. Key aims of the event are to develop transferable skills such as self-directed learning, presentation skills and to also provide information to enable students to make an informed decision about whether or not to pursue a career in medicine.

Students who attended last year reported a greater awareness and insight into medicine and an increased commitment to studying medicine. This was reflected in the vibrant atmosphere and student engagement throughout the week.

 Application opens Monday 22nd May 2017 and closes June 9th 2017

Communications Workshop

Date      Tuesday 25th April 2017

Are you interested in a career in medicine? This workshop will be for students to learn about how they can communicate more effectively and professionally.

There will be workshops on verbal, non-verbal and spoken communication.

With a talks from doctors, University of Leeds students and the admissions team you will get an insight into the essential communication skills required for a career in medicine.

Application Criteria:

  • Year 12 (must be at least 16 years of  age)
  • Priority given to students from a widening participation criteria

Situational Judgement Workshop

Date      Thursday 4th May 2017

Are you interested in a career in medicine?

This workshop will give you an introduction to situational judgement and why it is important in medicine

including its use in aptitude tests, interviews, medical school, in fifth year exams year and why it is important when making decisions as a doctor.

Birmingham University Open/Taster Days

Open Days and Campus Tours/Visits – These enable your students to find out more about the University of Birmingham.  Individual and school groups are welcome to come to the University’s Open Days held in June, September and October and further details can be found at http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/undergraduate/visit/opendays/index.aspx We also run campus tours every Tuesday and Thursday which individual prospective students can book to attend.

Skills4Uni – This is an interactive study skills website that takes sixth form students through the lifecycle of a project; from planning and research, through to final draft and presentation of the work. The materials have been designed to help support students with their sixth form work while simultaneously developing the independent learning skills needed for higher education study. Career in Radiotherapy

I am writing to invite any students who may be interested in a career in radiotherapy to attend our opening evening on Wednesday 26th October 2016 from 16.45 to 20.00.

Students will need to register, and places are offered on a first come first serve basis.

The opening evening will consist of:

· An overview of what radiotherapy is, and the work of a therapy radiographer.

· An overview of the Liverpool BSc programme (delivered by one of the course lecturers).

· A discussion of job roles, from a newly qualified radiographer to staff who have specialised

in to various roles.

· Tour of radiotherapy department (patient workload permitting)

· Demonstration and hands on experience of the equipment that is used.

Discover Days for Year 12 at Univeristy of Manchester

Manchester Uni

Registration is now open for a great series of Discover Days taking place this summer. Discover Days at Manchester offer potential applicants the chance to gain real insight into degree programmes they might study at this University. They provide a great opportunity for participants to gain first-hand experience and make informed decisions about their university choices before the start of the UCAS application process. Through lectures, workshops, departmental tours and more, participants will get a taste of how subjects they are interested in applying to study are taught at Manchester.

This summer’s events include Law, Life Sciences, English Literature & Creative Writing, Engineering, History, Nursing and Chemistry. A full list of events can be found on the website.

Please note, learners should register for the days independently using the individual booking forms for each event. Teachers do not need to accompany learners but are welcome to attend the Discover Days if they wish.

Geography – Law – Sociology and Social Policy (SSP) – Politics and International Studies (POLIS) 

The programme includes a careers talk, interactive seminars and group-work, and an informal Q&A session with current undergraduate students on the ‘student experience’ here at Leeds. This event aims to provide a showcase of the social sciences, illustrating the breadth of choice available in higher education, and give students a taste of what it’s like to study at university.
