Manchester University Open Days

Open Days: Sat 30 September and Sat 14 October  

You can register here.  Such visits are a great opportunity for students to explore different institutions as well as having the chance to find out more about their chosen courses.

Our work aims to support and add value to yours in providing information, advice and guidance in schools and colleges across the UK.  I would like to remind you of the opportunity for your students to join The University of Manchester Aspiring Students’ Society (UMASS). UMASS is a fantastic initiative which provides students in Year 12 and 13 with a unique insight into university life.  Students joining UMASS enjoy a range of privileges including online support via our website, podcasts, blogs and a monthly e-newsletter.  In addition, students living within traveling distance of Manchester have the opportunity to attend workshops on our campus covering topics such as writing personal statements, preparing for university interviews, taster lectures, revision sessions and one-to-one guidance sessions. Are you applying to medical school in October? Starting to put the finishing touches on your personal statement or have no idea where to begin? WAMS is running a personal statement workshop to take you through the do’s and don’ts of writing your personal statement.  (This worskhop is aimed at students applying in October 2017)
 
Application closes at 12 noon on Monday 19th June 2017. You will be informed by email if you have been allocated a place

Ethics Workshop

Interested in a career in medicine? Ethical scenarios form a big part of the interview process and also constantly crop up through medical training and your career. This workshop will give you the opportunity to get to grips with clinical, ethical questions with guidance from medical students.

 LMEA Medicine Summer School (non-residential)

Interested in a career in medicine? The Leeds School of Medicine Summer School is delivered by current medical students. Each day focuses on a topic ranging from paediatrics, primary care and public health, to basic life support, acute medicine, cancer care and end of life decisions. The diverse and important range of subjects are taught using case discussions and actively involves students through task based learning. Key aims of the event are to develop transferable skills such as self-directed learning, presentation skills and to also provide information to enable students to make an informed decision about whether or not to pursue a career in medicine.

Students who attended last year reported a greater awareness and insight into medicine and an increased commitment to studying medicine. This was reflected in the vibrant atmosphere and student engagement throughout the week.

 Application opens Monday 22nd May 2017 and closes June 9th 2017

Communications Workshop

Date      Tuesday 25th April 2017

Venue    Room X and Y, Worsley Building, University of Leeds.

Are you interested in a career in medicine? This workshop will be for students to learn about how they can communicate more effectively and professionally.

There will be workshops on verbal, non-verbal and spoken communication.

With a talks from doctors, University of Leeds students and the admissions team you will get an insight into the essential communication skills required for a career in medicine.

Application Criteria:

  • Year 12 (must be at least 16 years of  age)
  • Priority given to students from a widening participation criteria

Situational Judgement Workshop

Date      Thursday 4th May 2017

Time      5.30pm – 7.30pm

Venue    Room X and Y, Worsley Building, University of Leeds.

Are you interested in a career in medicine?

This workshop will give you an introduction to situational judgement and why it is important in medicine

including its use in aptitude tests, interviews, medical school, in fifth year exams year and why it is important when making decisions as a doctor.

Application Criteria:

  • Year 12 (must be at least 16 years of  age)
  • Priority given to students from a widening participation criteria

Birmingham University Open/Taster Days

Open Days and Campus Tours/Visits – These enable your students to find out more about the University of Birmingham.  Individual and school groups are welcome to come to the University’s Open Days held in June, September and October and further details can be found at http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/undergraduate/visit/opendays/index.aspx We also run campus tours every Tuesday and Thursday which individual prospective students can book to attend.

Skills4Uni – This is an interactive study skills website that takes sixth form students through the lifecycle of a project; from planning and research, through to final draft and presentation of the work. The materials have been designed to help support students with their sixth form work while simultaneously developing the independent learning skills needed for higher education study. Physics Work Experience Week for Year 12 Students

Monday 17 July to Friday 21 July 2017

Throughout the week, you will experience what it’s like to work in the School of Physics and Astronomy, meeting academics and students, learning about current research carried out within the School.  At the end, you’ll present your research to your peers, external guests, staff and students at a conference-style event.  You’ll gain skills in research, problem solving and collaborative group work – all while working in an academic setting.

BSc/MSci Biological Sciences Pathways Open Day (26.11.2016)

This Open Day is open to anyone who is interested in learning about our Biological Sciences programmes. At the event members of staff will be available to discuss aspects of our BSc and MSci Biological Sciences programmes; the entrance requirements; and the teaching and research facilities. In addition, current students of the RVC will take you on a tour of the London campus and provide a first-hand account of student life at the RVC.

BBC Academy

Many of you ask for events where your students can come in and talk to staff about our schemes. Just a reminder that there is a GET IN event in Salford on Saturday where BBC Scheme Managers from the Academy will give presentations and answer questions about our Apprenticeships and Postgraduate schemes.
