Netball Round Up

It has been a fantastic start to the 2017/2018 Netball Season, there has been some outstanding performances and plenty of areas highlighted during match play, that have created an ‘eager to learn’ ethos at training sessions. We got off to a slow start against Withington girls at our first Saturday fixture with some heavy losses across some of the year groups, particularly for the year 7 A squad. Tilly Y (Year 7 captain) put in a strong performance but the experience and determination of the Withington side lead to our first defeat. Since then the Year 7 squad have worked extremely hard in training, they have been enthusiastic and keen to learn and as a result gone from strength to strength and secured some amazing victories against teams such as Bradford Grammar and Loreto.

The year 8 squad have also had some great performances, defensively they have persisted with the centre pass defence strategies and made some game changing interceptions, particularly against Lymm High School where the score finished 9-7 to AGGS. Lucy B has shot consistently in every game and has become a key player for this squad and I know if they continue to train hard and put into practice during matches what they have learnt in training they will only grow stronger and have potential success at U14 National schools next year.

Our year 9 squad have some extremely talented players but have not yet realised their potential. As a squad they perform well as individuals but have yet to bring it together to produce a strong TEAM performance. Our superstar shooters Neave B and Emma B shoot consistently well and their skill level is outstanding. Charlotte T plays with passion and determination in every game and never gives up and is an asset to the team. Defensively Sarah A has improved every week and I know she will continue to work hard and make game changing interceptions. We attended National Schools earlier this term at Bury Grammar School where the team came up against some of the strongest opposition in the country against schools with very strong club links. As a team they gave some great performances and showed glimmers of brilliance, but unfortunately it was not enough to secure them a place in the next round. It did however give this squad a fantastic experience and the determination to ensure they improve for their next opportunity in 2 years’ time.

The year 10 and 11 squads have been training extremely hard and had some great wins so far this season. The year 11 squad were joined by Issy C, Kitty H and Raavi S at the U16 National Schools competition in November where they just missed out on a place in the semi final having only lost to Stockport Grammar and Bolton Girls School. They played some outstanding Netball and they are improving every match.

We have had some super stars emerge through the Manchester Thunder Performance Pathways with Laura M and Niamh H making it onto the Under 17 Squad and Elena N making the U21 squad. A huge achievement. These girls are true role models to every student at AGGS and we are extremely proud of them.

National Schools Badminton Championships : Round 1 – Trafford

This afternoon AGGS took on Flixton, Lostock, Stretford, and Sale Grammar in the first round of the National Schools Badminton Championships at Sale High School.
We had two U14s teams which were lavanya, Anusha, Jahnavi, Samyukatha,  and Alicia in the A team and Neave, Dristi, Harshitha, Nam, and Charlotte on the B team.

All teams played well with some outstanding performances.

Both the U16s teams were unbeaten scoring maximum points in their competitions. The A team beat Sale grammar 55:6, and beat Stretford 55:3. The B team beat Flixton 55:15, Stretford 55:13 and Sale Grammer 55:7. This meant that they had to play each other in the final! AGGS A team won 53:49 but both teams will go through to the next round.

Manchester Schools Indoor Athletics Champions 2017

AGGS are the Manchester Schools Indoor Athletics Champions.

AGGS team of 8 Athletes

Friday 13th October – 8 Athletes from AGGS set off to Sports City in Manchester for the Indoor Athletics Championships. Each athlete competed in one event each and there were some excellent individual performances.

Alice D was the star of the day winning a gold medal in the girls 300m with an impressive time of 44.62seconds.

Silver medals were awarded to Maddie L in the 60m hurdles, Laura H in the 800m  and Kitty H in the shot putt.

Emma S jumped an impressive 4m42cm in the long jump winning a bronze medal.

Mary W and Annie C ran in the 60m and 200m respectfully and both just missed out on medals by a few seconds. Millie P also had an excellent performance in the high jump sadly missing the medal mark by just a few cm.

The relay team (Emma, Mary, Annie and Alice) also came 4th in the girls 4x200m relay in a very fast competitive finish to the day.

With points being totted up it was very close between AGGS, St Peter’s and Trinity. However, with 199 points AGGS were presented with the winners trophy claiming first place over all.

All competitors were year 10 so will have another shot at retaining the trophy next year. Can they do the double?

SPORTS DAY 2017

We had a very successful sports day mainly due to the wonderful organisation of Mrs Walker – thank you.

We had the throwing events in the morning along with the 1500m and 800m and then the whole school came out to support their forms in the many sprint races. The afternoons event concluded with the winners and runners up of the 3x100m relays from years 9 and 10 racing against staff teams.

On this occasion Mr Capon’s team won.

A great day was had by all with the results not being announced until final assembly on the last day of term.

Thank you to all staff who helped with the organisation on the day including measuring field events in the morning and time keeping and crowd control in the afternoon.

Here are a selection of photos illustrating the atmosphere of the day.

SUMMER HOCKEY SUCCESS

Congratulations to Charlotte L, Jenny J, Roisin D and Daisy A who had been selected to play on the U13 North West teams in the Tensworth (an anagram of North West!!), hockey competition at the Armitage Centre over three days last week. They were playing against teams from all over the country, including Wales. Charlotte, Jenny and Roisin were playing on the team who finished 7th and Daisy on the team who finished Runners-up. The standard of competition was very high and no doubt some of the players will represent England and Wales in years to come.

Our girls had a brilliant time and did themselves justice.

Well done girls, we are very proud of you.

YEAR 7 ROUNDERS SUCCESS

The year 7tounders team had qualified for the Trafford League finals from previous success.

The finals were to comprise of the 4 winning area teams in Trafford. Unfortunately only one other team turned up to play, Sale High School. In the match, which involved playing several innings, the girls played some excellent rounders displaying some very good batting and fielding skills and won the game by 19 rounders to 5.

Well done to Evie and her team : Suzanne, Georgia, Maddie, Livvi, Ava, Zofia, Daisy, Katie, Phoebe and Rosa. They each won a medal and the team won the winners trophy.
