Mrs Finch took a team of enthusiastic Year 8 and 9 cricketers to the Timperley Festival on Sunday. They played teams with various ages of players from 12noon until 4pm.

The best part about it was that a couple of players could not play because of illness so Mrs Finch got to play along with one of the mums! It was a wonderful day’s cricket. We were the youngest team there ( apart from Mrs Finch) but they did not disgrace themselves at all, winning 2 matches and losing 3. A great time was had by all. This involvement is thanks to Toby Mullin who has been coming to school most Friday lunchtimes to coach the girls. We have a handful of cricketers, the rest are keen games players.

Thank you to all who played for making it such an enjoyable day. Thanks also goes to the parents for their support throughout the season.

We entered the National Schools Schools’ Sports Magazine T20 cricket competition again this year. We were drawn in a group of 3 with Ormaskirk Grammar School and Fallibroome High School.

Off we went to Ormskirk to play. A strong cricketing School with nothing to fear. We batted first and did not score enough runs : we were 81 all out after our 20 overs.

Ormskirk then went into bat and were 124 for 3 after their 20 overs.

We had lost against a better team but it was great experience for the girls.

We did not play Fallibroome High School as our planned match had to be cancelled because of rain and the match had to be played before half term. During the last week we had exams so we were not able to rearrange the match.

I hope you keep playing next year.

Good luck.   Mrs Finch

The year 7 and 8 cricket team had qualified for this final as Trafford champions. There were five teams in the competition so had four matches. We played some good cricket to beat St Nicholas School, Northwich, Cheadle Hulme School and Tytherington High School, Macclesfield. However, we did not play to our potential when playing Prenton School from the Wirral and we lost the game by 58 runs to 44. The girls did very well considering they had new members on the team from last year. These girls played some good cricket and gained valuable experience.

The team were County runners-up and were presented with a certificate and a medal.

Well done to Laurie and her team.

The U15 cricket team had a narrow escape against Sale Grammar School in the Trafford round of the National Schools’ competition.

We bowled first and Sale were all out for 58 runs.

It was then our turn to bat. We were 37 for 7 when Ellie R. came into bat needing to score 21 runs. She eventually scored 24 runs, winning us the game. Well done Ellie.

The team now go through to the county final after Easter.

Toby Mullins, our resident cricket coach, organised a cricket activator course aimed at developing skills needed to introduce beginners to the game of cricket. 13 of our cricketers took the course which was for 6 hours over two afternoons. They now have to deliver cricket for 10 hours to pass the course. They will hopefully be trying to inspire some new year 7 and year 8 and 9 girls to take up the sport so we can continue with the success we have had this year.

Watch this space.

The U13 cricket team had been invited to the North of England final of this National Competition as they had reached the North final of the indoor competition.

There were 6 teams in the competition : Appleby Grammar School, Cumbria ; North Durham Academy, Durham ; Urmston Grammar School, Lancashire ; Corbridge Middle School, Northumberland ; Driffield School, Yorkshire and AGGS, Cheshire.

The competition was played in 2 sections of 3. We lost our first match against Driffield and then against Corbridge so we then played for 5th/6th place. The girls had a great match and beat Appleby Grammar School quite easily. It was great to see them win a match.

The girls played some excellent cricket against some very strong opposition. In the final Corbridge beat Urmston. ( We actually had a better result against Corbridge!!!!!).

Well done to Laurie Sheridan and her team : Charlotte Lord, Nielja Gerhard, Lois Haworth, Sarah Wide, Emma Simpson, Amber Thoms, Emily Conway, Millie Sewell Nd Lucia Oram. It was a great achievement seeing as, out of a squad of 10 players, only 4 of them were crickets. The rest were very good games players transferring their skills from their major sports.

Two of our senior players also came to act as managers and ended up scoring and learning how to fill in a proper score sheet. Ellie and Hannahhad a great time.

Special thanks must go to Mrs Simpson, who came to support the team and to Mr Sheridan for coaching the team throughout the tournament.

We all had a great day.

The U15 cricket team played against Urmston Grammar School in the second round of the School Sports Magazine’s T 20 competition. Urmston scored 111 for 5 after their 50 overs. Our team played well and kept Urmston’s score to a beatable one.

However Urmston had some very strong bowlers who could bowl hard and straight and out batters could not cope. We were all out for 47.

This was a heavy loss but a lot of positives came out of the match to work on for next time. Most of our team had not played hard ball cricket before but had enjoyed the challenge of learning a new sport. Cricket is growing at ‘Alti Girls’ and more and more girls are coming to Toby’s practice on a Friday lunchtime.

We must also thank Timperley Cricket Club for providing the funding to buy two sets of quick cricket for us. We are hoping to develop cricket further with our more experienced players running sessions to encourage some of their friends to start playing. These two sets of bats, balls and stumps will therefore be very useful.

T20 cricket success

Congratulations to the U15 cricket team for winning their first ever T20 match against Fallibroome in the Schools Sports Magazine National competition. The match was played after the final exam on the Friday which was a great end to a week of exams. We scored 88 runs in our 20 overs, with Laurie Sheriden (year 7) the top scorer with 35 runs. We now play Urmston Grammar School in the next round after half term.

Congratulations to Hannah (year 10) and Laurie (year 7) for being selected for The Cheshire County Cricket teams at U15 and U13 level respectively. Well done girls.

Also the year 7-10 cricket squad had an excellent practice (in the sunshine) at Timperley Cricket Club in preparation for their first T20 match against Fallibroome High School next Wednesday in the School Sports Magazine T20 National Schools’ competition. Good luck girls.

The team has been selected and they are all looking forward to the match.

Here are some pictures of them practicing. Some of them had never had cricket pads or helmets on before!!!!
