The seniors had their final hockey practice of 2016 at Bowdon Hockey Club tonight. Their task was to dress up and have some fun. They certainly did this. Thank you girls for getting into the spirit of the occasion and thanks to Res and Sean for coaching the girls throughout this term.
70+ girls took part in the Manchester Indoor Rowing competition at Levenshulme High School, on Tuesday. Last year we only took a few rowers but this year so many girls wanted to be involved, that we entered four year 10 teams, five year 9 teams, three year 8 teams and four year 8 teams. In total there were 283 teams (1132 individuals) from Manchester, Stockport and Trafford.
Each team of four rowed for 8 minutes (4 minutes for each rower). As there was no changeover time the girls had to find their own way of changing the rower in the shortest time possible. They had to see how many metres they could row in the allotted time. The winning teams in each age group qualify for the county final after Christmas. Date TBC.
The results were amazing. Each year group won their competition with one of their teams for Trafford.
Years 10 : Phoebe, Zoe, Laura and Leah (2005 metres)
Year 9 : Ellie, Dani, Milan and Millie ( 1959 metres)
Year 8 : two teams had the same winning distance : 1751 metres. Unfortunately we can only enter one team in the county final so Mrs Finch is going to have a selection headache!!!!! Charlotte, Nielja, Beth and Holly and Neave, Alicia, Anna and Mila.
Year 7 : Kirsten, Selin, Phoebe and Eloise
Well done to everyone who rowed and good luck in the next round. It now becomes serious so teams need to get together and practice if they are to do themselves justice in the event.
On Saturday 4 of our athletes competed in the national finals of the English Schools’ cross country cup. There were 24 teams running from schools all over the country. Teams are generally made up of 6 runners, with the first 4 counting towards the team score, so we were under pressure for all our runners to perform to the highest standard and avoid any injuries during the race. And as always our girls rose to the challenge.
The 4 put in fantastic individual performances – Hannah was 7th overall, Millie 23rd, Laura 65th and Emma 66th out of 140 runners. It’s very hard to tell how other schools have performed until the results are announced.
The team finished in 8th place overall – this is a fantastic achievement considering how many schools enter this competition – there are 35 county rounds and within that around 500 schools. To finish 8th in the country is no mean feat.
Thanks to their girls for their commitment to this competition – cross country isn’t everyone’s favourite!!
There were 14 schools altogether and some tough competition – Manchester area is traditionally a very strong area for athletics.
The girls competed in 60m, 60m Hurdles, 200m, 300m, 800m, Long Jump, Shot, High Jump and 4x200m relay. We gave some very good individual performances and gained 6 individual medals out of the 9 events.
Maddie 60m hurdles Gold
Kitty Shot Silver
Anna 60m Silver
Laura 800m Bronze
Millie High Jump Bronze
Emma Long Jump Bronze
The girls predicted that they would come about 7th or 8th and were delighted when the results put us in 2nd place behind Wright Robinson – with the same points total but we had one gold and they had 3 so they were presented as winners. A fantastic effort and many of the officials and coaches came over to congratulate the girls on their performance and said how well they had done to beat so many Manchester schools.
However, over that weekend I received a call from the organiser to say that there had been an error with the placings in the 300m. Charlotte had been given 6th place when actually she had come 4th. So that meant we actually scored more points that Wright Robinson and were the rightful winners!! Martin the organiser brought the trophy to school the following week.
Well done to Laura, Maddie, Millie, Emma, Kitty, Mary, Anna, Charlotte and Holly on their superb team effort.
Tilly, 10-3, competed in the ISU (International Skating Union) Winter Cup, Belgium this Wednesday with her team The Whizz Kids. She Scored a personal best and they won the Silver Medal, in Synchronised skating with her partner Tabitha (from another school)!
