The U18 team had qualified for the North of England final of the National Schools’ Competition as winners from the North West round.
We travelled up to Leeds to take part in this very prestigious competition, knowing that the standard of play was going to be very high.
Our first game in our section was against GSAL ( Leeds Grammar School). After dominating the first part of the game we found ourselves 1-0 down. We created many chances but could just not convert them. Leeds were a very strong team and have reached the National finals on many occasions. Our girls played very well.
Our next game was against Greenhead School, from Huddersfield. We knew we had to win to have any chance of reaching the semi finals. The girls had a great game winning 4-1. We were still in the competition.
Our final match in the section was against old rivals Kirkham Grammar School from Lancashire. We knew we had to win or draw the match to qualify for the semis. The game did not go according to plan and Kirkham scored but the girls dug deep and equalised. The last part of the game was very frantic but we held on to the draw.
We were now in the semi finals, but against the tournament favourites and local rivals Stockport Grammar School. We had lost 6-0 in the county round so we knew we had a very difficult match in front of us.
The girls played some excellent hockey and created some chances but Stockport were too skilful and strong. We lost the game 3-0 so Stockport went though to the final where they beat GSAL 2-1.
Our girls had a great day and went home reasonably happy. Thanks must go to Sean from Bowdon Hockey Club who came to help coach the squad and to the many parents who transported the girls to the tournament. Thank you very much.
