MFL Poetry Success

Trisha and Sophie – MFL Poetry competition Winners

We are delighted to announce that Sophie H and Trisha S won the KS4 category of  the Mother Tongue Other Tongue competition at a National Celebration of the MFL poetry event at MMU.

Trisha and Sophie have been invited to read out French poems which they wrote and entered for the competition at MMU. We were only allowed to enter four poems, so to have two being read out and winning awards is a great achievement.  The students wrote their poems unaided.

They were interviewed by That’s Manchester TV, and were very impressive by the natural way they talked to the interviewer.  As is to be expected, Sophie and Trisha were a credit to the school in their behaviour and in what they said to people during the proceedings.

See below the interview on That’s Manchester TV news (There is a bit about book benches first – the poetry starts at about 1 min 5 sec):

Both evenings were followed by very successful examinations with all students achieving outstanding results.

GCSE Presentation Evening 2016

GCSE presentation evening, Sep 2016Our Annual GCSE Presentation Evening took place on Thursday 22nd September 2016, at the Forum Centre, Wythenshawe.
The evening included music recitals, drama performance by Year 12 and 13 students.

The guest speaker for this year was a former AGGS student, Jane Scrivner, who founded a complementary therapy business and has also established her own multi-award winning brands of skincare products, as well as publishing a number of books. Jane’s speech was inspirational and motivating, and shed light to a career path of a self-employed woman.

The evening continued with a speech by Principal Stephanie Gill, and certificates were given to all former Year 11 students.

This event is a special evening celebrating the outstanding achievements of our students. 100% of students gained at least 5 subjects at A*-C, including English and Mathematics. A superb 96% of examinations taken were graded from A*-B, 80% were graded A*-A and an impressive 43% were graded A*.

Well done to all involved.

A Huge Thank You from the Drama Department

This year the PTA have funded the purchase of a new set of lights and a harlequin floor cloth for the drama studio. The extra lights mean that a more sophisticated range of lighting effects can be achieved in the studio and this is enhanced by the harlequin floor which enables the classroom to become a ‘black-box studio’, in which the lights are intensified. So far this has had a huge impact on the students, particularly at KS4 and KS5 as the new equipment has worked to enhance their practical examination performances. At KS3, the girls are now able to experiment with a wider range of lighting states and colours to enrich their work in lessons. A huge thank you to the PTA for their continued support of the Drama department. Below are some images of the GCSE and A-Level work that has been performed this term.

GCSE Presentation Evening

GCSE Evening September 2015On Thursday 24th September, Year 12 pupils, their parents and teachers attended the GCSE Presentation Evening, at The Forum Centre, Wythenshawe. This is an annual event to celebrate their hard work and excellent GCSE results.

The evening included speeches, musical recitals, a performance by Year 12 Drama and Theatre Studies students and we welcomed former AGGS student, Major Jill Winters, as the guest speaker. The evening concluded with the  presentation of certificates and a vote of thanks by Senior Students. Finally, there was a photographic  celebration of Year 11.

All agreed Major Jill Winters was a fascinating personality and a good example to represent AGGS. Her career path and life story intrigued the audience and met with great admiration by people who attended the event.

The evening was a fitting celebration of our pupils who achieved impressive results in their GCSEs:

100% of students gained at least 5 subjects at A*-C, including English and Mathematics. A wonderful 98% of examinations taken were graded from A*-B, 84% were graded A*-A and a magnificent total of 50% were graded A*.
