Eurovision 2017

On Monday 17 July, all year 8 students took part in the annual MFL Eurovision competition. This involves learning a song in French, German and Spanish and performing it from memory. The standard of the competition was very high, with wonderful costumes, great singing and some very impressive choreography. The acts were interspersed by some performances from our year 10 language leaders and our year 12 language students. 8-2, representing Spain, were crowned winners for their performance of Alvaros Soler’s El Mismo Sol. Congratulations to all our participants! ¡Felicidades! Gut gemacht! Félicitations!

Maths/MFL Roadshow

Math/MFL Roadshow, June 2017
Math/MFL Roadshow, June 2017

On Thursday close to seventy Year 8 and Year 9 pupils from seven different schools across the area (including AGGS, Cedar Mount and MCA) got together in the AGGS main hall for the Maths/MFL Roadshow. The hall was alive with activity and conversation as the pupils set to solving maths problems in pairs. The extra challenge was that all the problems were written in French, Spanish or German! Pupils worked really well together, some even managed to work out problems in languages they weren’t studying. There were some very helpful Year 10 students from AGGS present to help out when the going got tough and to check answers when success had been achieved.

Thank you to everyone who helped out in any way to make the event run so smoothly, we will hope to be running a similar Roadshow next year.’

Spelling Bee Success

Spelling Bee Success, March 2017
Spelling Bee Success, March 2017

We were delighted to accompany three girls in year 7 to the regional final of the spelling bee competition in Manchester on Thursday 30 March. Aahi competed in Spanish, Alekhya competed in French and Parnika competed in German. All three girls did extremely well, with Parnika winning third prize for German and Alekhya winning first prize for French. We were extremely proud of them! They have now qualified to take part in the national final of the competition in June in Cambridge.

Bonne chance! Viel Glück! Buene suerte!

French Trip February 2017

A group of 39 girls from Years 8, 9, 12 and 13 spent five days in Normandy during February half-term.  We stayed in a study-centre where the girls participated in activities such as bread-making, archery, circus-skills and photogramme (making photos without a camera).  All the instructors spoke only in French, so the girls were pleased to be able to follow their instructions and to learn new vocabulary.  There were also excursions to the local market (where the girls had to buy the most unusual thing they could find, won by a foot-long black radish), to a caramel-producing farm, to the famous Mont St Michel and to a World War 2 the way they really made an effort to use their French.

Huge congratulations to all our year 7 pupils who took part in the school final of the spelling bee competition. The standard of the competition was extremely high and the pupils amazed their teachers with their speed and precision. The three winners were Alekhya for French, Parnika for German and Aahi for Spanish. They have now qualified to represent the school in the regional competition in March. Well done!

Languages success

AGGS MFL success at Northern Schools Debating Competition, 17 Nov 2016On Thursday 17th November, Miss Benson, Mrs Garcia and Mrs Crowson took three teams of Year 13 language students (French, German and Spanish) to the Northern Schools Debating Competition at Cheadle Hulme School.  It was the first time that AGGS has entered, and the girls had to debate topics such as “Give me knowledge, not money” and “Numbers are better than letters” in their foreign language against teams from schools including MGS, Manchester High, Withington and QEGS Blackburn. All three teams did well, the German team (Sophie-Jo G and Emma R) reaching the semi-final, where they lost narrowly to Manchester High on “Brexit is the answer.” Our French team (Rowena O and Arisha H) acquitted themselves well, too.

Our Spanish team (Sophie H and Hannah D) won their Brexit semi-final, and faced Cheadle Hulme in a debate for which they had 15 minutes’ preparation on “We should all learn a universal language.” The standard of the Spanish was ver high, and after long deliberations Sophie and Hannah were announced the winners.  As well as books and a shield, they each won the fabulous prize of a week’s work experience in Spain!

MFL Eurovision Song Contest

MFL Eurovision Song Contest 2016

The annual MFL Eurovision Song Contest took place on Monday 18th July. All classes in year 8 took part and this year’s standard was very high. In a strong field, 8-5 triumphed with their Spanish song, Sofia. They were almost eclipsed by the MFL teachers’ rendition of the classic ‘Aux Champs-Elysées’. Congratulations in particular to 8-5 but also to all the students who took part, the teachers who helped with choreography and staging. We would also like to thank the senior staff team, the year 12 jury and the year 10 language ambassadors panel for their judging.

Mr Capon did a very efficient job as usual in providing lighting and sound.

Transbee Success

Transbee Success 2016

Our year 9 girls performed incredibly well at the Transbee competition in Cambridge on Wednesday.  Isobella, Sophie and Megan performed really well in French, Sneha in 9-5 won second prize for French, Ella in 9-7 won second prize for Spanish and Alcina in 9-7 won first prize for Spanish. This was a national translating competition, so they have done tremendously well.

MFL French Trip 2016

French-trip-2016

We are safely back from an extremely successful and enjoyable trip with Year 9. Highlights included Mont St Michel and Saint-Malo as well as Parc Asterix, where Nina, Val and Dorothy went on some very scary rides, as did all the girls. They also liked touring a champagne cellar in Reims, but the top attraction for the girls was the makeup shop Sephora, where they spent a grand total of 1105€!
