On Monday 17 July, all year 8 students took part in the annual MFL Eurovision competition. This involves learning a song in French, German and Spanish and performing it from memory. The standard of the competition was very high, with wonderful costumes, great singing and some very impressive choreography. The acts were interspersed by some performances from our year 10 language leaders and our year 12 language students. 8-2, representing Spain, were crowned winners for their performance of Alvaros Soler’s El Mismo Sol. Congratulations to all our participants! ¡Felicidades! Gut gemacht! Félicitations!

MFL Poetry Success

Trisha and Sophie - MFL Poetry competition Winners
Trisha and Sophie – MFL Poetry competition Winners

We are delighted to announce that Sophie H and Trisha S won the KS4 category of  the Mother Tongue Other Tongue competition at a National Celebration of the MFL poetry event at MMU.

Trisha and Sophie have been invited to read out French poems which they wrote and entered for the competition at MMU. We were only allowed to enter four poems, so to have two being read out and winning awards is a great achievement.  The students wrote their poems unaided.

They were interviewed by That’s Manchester TV, and were very impressive by the natural way they talked to the interviewer.  As is to be expected, Sophie and Trisha were a credit to the school in their behaviour and in what they said to people during the proceedings.

See below the interview on That’s Manchester TV news (There is a bit about book benches first – the poetry starts at about 1 min 5 sec):

Maths/MFL Roadshow

Math/MFL Roadshow, June 2017
Math/MFL Roadshow, June 2017

On Thursday close to seventy Year 8 and Year 9 pupils from seven different schools across the area (including AGGS, Cedar Mount and MCA) got together in the AGGS main hall for the Maths/MFL Roadshow. The hall was alive with activity and conversation as the pupils set to solving maths problems in pairs. The extra challenge was that all the problems were written in French, Spanish or German! Pupils worked really well together, some even managed to work out problems in languages they weren’t studying. There were some very helpful Year 10 students from AGGS present to help out when the going got tough and to check answers when success had been achieved.

Thank you to everyone who helped out in any way to make the event run so smoothly, we will hope to be running a similar Roadshow next year.’

MMU A Level Translation Competition Success

Francesca and Tania - A Level Spanish Translation Competition Success, MMU
Francesca and Tania – A Level Spanish Translation Competition Success, MMU

Y12 Spanish took part in the Manchester Metropolitan University A-Level translation competition this year, and we are delighted that out of a number of entries from many different schools, both of our shortlisted entries won. Francesca B won the first prize and Tania T received the Second Prize.

The translation task was to produce an English version of a well-known song by top Spanish hip-hop singer El Chojín, who has a very high profile not just in his home country but throughout Latin America. The competition aimed to promote language learning through song lyrics, introducing A-Level students to the challenges of the translation of songs, and encourage them to engage with topical social issues and popular culture in Spanish.

Both Francesca and Tania were praised for their hard work and effort, which is testimony to their ability and to their passion for Spanish.

Spelling Bee Success, March 2017

We were delighted to accompany three girls in year 7 to the regional final of the spelling bee competition in Manchester on Thursday 30 March. Aahi competed in Spanish, Alekhya competed in French and Parnika competed in German. All three girls did extremely well, with Parnika winning third prize for German and Alekhya winning first prize for French. We were extremely proud of them! They have now qualified to take part in the national final of the competition in June in Cambridge.

Bonne chance! Viel Glück! Buene suerte!

French Trip February 2017

A group of 39 girls from Years 8, 9, 12 and 13 spent five days in Normandy during February half-term.  We stayed in a study-centre where the girls participated in activities such as bread-making, archery, circus-skills and photogramme (making photos without a camera).  All the instructors spoke only in French, so the girls were pleased to be able to follow their instructions and to learn new vocabulary.  There were also excursions to the local market (where the girls had to buy the most unusual thing they could find, won by a foot-long black radish), to a caramel-producing farm, to the famous Mont St Michel and to a World War 2 the way they really made an effort to use their French.

The students who took part had a fabulous week and thoroughly enjoyed experiencing German life with a host family. The work experience placements included working in primary schools, with solicitors,  tourist information centre, a dentist and a book shop. We managed to join this up with the MUN conference taking place in our partner school

The three winners were Alekhya for French, Parnika for German and Aahi for Spanish. They have now qualified to represent the school in the regional competition in March. Well done!

Languages success

AGGS MFL success at Northern Schools Debating Competition, 17 Nov 2016On Thursday 17th November, Miss Benson, Mrs Garcia and Mrs Crowson took three teams of Year 13 language students (French, German and Spanish) to the Northern Schools Debating Competition at Cheadle Hulme School.  It was the first time that AGGS has entered, and the girls had to debate topics such as “Give me knowledge, not money” and “Numbers are better than letters” in their foreign language against teams from schools including MGS, Manchester High, Withington and QEGS Blackburn. All three teams did well, the German team (Sophie-Jo G and Emma R) reaching the semi-final, where they lost narrowly to Manchester High on “Brexit is the answer.” Our French team (Rowena O and Arisha H) acquitted themselves well, too.

Our Spanish team (Sophie H and Hannah D) won their Brexit semi-final, and faced Cheadle Hulme in a debate for which they had 15 minutes’ preparation on “We should all learn a universal language.” The standard of the Spanish was ver high, and after long deliberations Sophie and Hannah were announced the winners.  As well as books and a shield, they each won the fabulous prize of a week’s work experience in Spain!
