Year 9 – Ryman National Enterprise Challenge 2018

Year 9 - Ryman National Enterprise Challenge

Year 9 – Ryman National Enterprise Challenge, January 2018ASPIRE

On Tuesday 16th January the Year 9’s took part in the Ryman National Enterprise Challenge whose ambassador is Theo Paphitis! The challenge this year was set by Ryman and it was to create an item of stationery which could be used by Ryman customers. It couldn’t replicate anything that Ryman have done before, it had to be unique.

By taking part in this Challenge not only did the girls enjoy the experience but also gained skills in creativity, management, entrepreneurship and team work, all attributes which are essential in today’s world.

Year 9 – Ryman National Enterprise Challenge, 1st place – Ready 2 Rule’ from 9-5

As you would expect all the groups came up with exceptional ideas and it was very hard to judge. Unfortunately, there could only be one winning team and that was ‘Ready 2 Rule’ from 9-5 which was made up of Mboje, Mimi, Rose, Florence, Ella and Milly. Their product was a pencil case within which was a pencil pot aimed at organising Y7 and Y8 students. They presented their idea with a very catchy rap and slogan – ‘restart, repeat, reorganise!’
‘Ready 2 Rule’ will now go onto the National Finals at Telford International Centre in July to compete against over 250 schools.
We wish them the best of luck.

Congratulations to all the students who took part, you all worked very hard to produce some amazing, original and good quality products. Enterprise Competition Success

Together Enterprise Competition - Y12 winners

ASPIREWe are delighted to announce that two of our Year 12 students have been successful in an Enterprise Competition which has gained them each an individual prize of an iPad as well as a cheque for £2,500 for the school.

Zara A and  Shufei C were the winning team members in the Together Enterprise Challenge which was open to students aged 15-18 from schools across the North West.

They had to prepare a Business Plan to win the backing of the judges who were the CEO and three senior directors of Together Financial Services in Cheadle.

The challenge was to create a business which utilised the facilities of a large country house in Cheshire, which had fallen into disrepair, using the financial loans provided by Together. Zara and Shufei came up with the idea of a Social Enterprise leisure centre specifically targeting people with mental health issues who wanted fun and exercise in a caring environment.

AGGS team on the Together competitionThe competition was launched in September by the Enterprise Department of Mrs Gillibrand and Mrs Gerrard and since then the students have been working on their plan alongside the four other teams from our school who entered the competition.

Three teams completed the challenge and made their pitches in late November and the two successful teams were selected to go through to the finals by a panel which included Mrs Gillibrand, Mrs Gerrard and Mr Murray.

At the finals on Monday 4th December our other team of Kayleigh C, Hira K and Martha W gave a wonderful presentation on their Escape Room idea and were highly commended for their originality by the judges.

In choosing their winning team the judges were highly impressed with not only the extremely passionate and professional quality of Zara and Shufei’s presentation but also by the extensive research which went into their business plan.

Both students who joined AGGS sixth form from other schools were delighted with their success and have received a massive boost to their confidence.…as well as their Apple collections.

Wilmott Dixon Enterprise day – What would be your ideal school!

Y10 Enterprise - Willmott Dixon

We have been very fortunate that Willmott Dixon agreed to deliver a second Enterprise day to the whole of Year 10 on Friday 14th July.
“The Willmott Dixon enterprise day is designed to encourage employability skills, whilst highlighting curriculum links to the construction industry”.

During the morning the groups completed 3 team building tasks and were awarded points not only for the result but also how well they communicated together and worked as a team. The points were then totalled and this was then used to work out their budget for the build of a new school.

Each group had to calculate how many classrooms they needed; receptions, staff rooms, sports facilities; swimming pool etc. They then used the costing sheets to calculate how much their school would cost. It was a very fraught day especially when disaster struck at lunchtime and they had to spend £5,000,000 in order to fix the problem.

Each of the groups had to present their ideas to the judges and an overall winner was chosen. The winning group were Caitlin Dennehy, Natasha Devbhandari, Diana Gibbons, Imogen Gordon, Poppy Hall and Olivia Davey-Bashir from 10-5. Next term they will have the opportunity to visit a building in Manchester which is currently being constructed by Willmott Dixon. This will be a fantastic opportunity to see the range of career opportunities and progression paths available in the construction industry.

We look forward to working with Willmott Dixon again next year as it was a fantastic day and all of the students enjoyed it but more importantly they not only built on their enterprise skills but also learnt about possible career paths.

Year 9 – Rymans National Enterprise Final

The National Enterprise Challenge
The National Enterprise Challenge

The 2017 Ryman National Enterprise Challenge final was held at The International Centre, Telford on Tuesday 4th July. The event saw the winning teams from over 120 schools come together to compete against each other. High street retailer and stationery giant, Ryman set students the task of creating an app for Ryman’s. The students had to convince the panel that the app can engage with Rymans customers and also create revenue, increase brand awareness or improve the customer service. The Study Room from 9-1 who consisted of Sarah, Natasha, Anna, Khadeejah, Eloise and Mary represented the school and did themselves and the school proud. They were chosen as one of the four schools out of fifty-five

to present their pitch to a packed auditorium including Theo Paphitis! Unfortunately they weren’t crowned the overall winners but Sarah Wide was awarded the KS3 most enterprising student and was given a framed certificate and two passes to Alton Towers.

The students had a good day as the event was hosted by children’s TV legends Sam and Mark. There was a guest speech from Jo Clarke – Olympic Gold medallist in kayaking – who came to the finals to tell his story first hand and to show the students that if you want something enough – then anything really is possible – “Hard work and dedication pays off”. Theo Paphitis headed up the judging panel and hosted a Q&A with the students – “Be inspired by everything around you, use everything as inspiration”.

Well done to Sarah, Natasha, Anna, Khadeejah, Eloise and Mary – we have definitely got some budding entrepreneurs within the school.

Siemens Rollercoaster challenge

Rollercoaster Challenge
Rollercoaster Challenge

Next years’ GCSE Computing students were given the opportunity of entering the Siemens Rollercoaster challenge. In groups of five they had to create a working replica of a rollercoaster using a kinnex kit. We had six teams competing against each other to represent the school at the finals at the Etihad stadium on 5th July. On open evening we asked perspective parents to vote on which rollercoaster they thought was the best. The winning team consisted of Tarunya, Rijuta, Eisha, Arushi and Vismaya. Mr Roberts and Mrs Turpin accompanied the group to the finals and they were both impressed with how confident the girls presented themselves to the judges.

Make it! Challenge, June 2017

8 x year 10 girls took part in the competition sponsored by Kelloggs They had to design a cereal bar. They had to build a model in the factory they would make it in, set out costings and marketing ideas and then present their pitch to the dragons. They were amazing and we all had a great day developing our understanding of the process of manufacturing, improving our team work and presentation skills. Well done to all of them.

Siemens Rollercoaster Challenge 2017

Siemens Enterprise31 year 9 students had an introductory presentation to the Siemens Rollercoaster Challenge which we are competing in this year. The challenge has been developed to provide a fun, inspiring, informative and hands on activity for students in years 7,8,& 9 to help develop an understanding of the physics and mechanics required to design, build, test and race their very own miniature Rollercoaster! We have 6 teams who are battling it out to represent AGGS at the finals in July. The students have until 22nd June to design and build the rollercoaster using the kit supplied. We are going to be asking parents and students at the Open Evening on 22nd June to vote for their favourite. Good Luck to all teams.
