Y10 Careers Day and Practice Interviews

Y10 Careers InterviewsOn Friday 8th July all of Y10 took part in a careers day. It was a great learning experience to help prepare students for the ‘real’ world of employment. During the day classes were going to the Hall for practice interviews delivered by local employers, parents and alumnae. Throughout the rest of the day students were involved in CV writing, Labour market information sessions and a motivational & team building session with the RAF. We were very grateful to the interviewers who gave up their own time to come into school. They were very impressed with the students’ conduct and would have readily employed some of them there and then!

MFL Eurovision Song Contest 2016

The annual MFL Eurovision Song Contest took place on Monday 18th July. All classes in year 8 took part and this year’s standard was very high. In a strong field, 8-5 triumphed with their Spanish song, Sofia. They were almost eclipsed by the MFL teachers’ rendition of the classic ‘Aux Champs-Elysées’. Congratulations in particular to 8-5 but also to all the students who took part, the teachers who helped with choreography and staging. We would also like to thank the senior staff team, the year 12 jury and the year 10 language ambassadors panel for their judging.

Mr Capon did a very efficient job as usual in providing lighting and sound.

Year 12 students have arrived back safely from Augsburg on Saturday. The students enjoyed fantastic hospitality in their host families and completed a variety of work experience placements, including working with a vet, a dentist, in a museum, in a pharmacy, in the tourist information office and in primary schools. The employers were very impressed with our students.

Energy Challenge

Enery challenge

Last week 41 Year 8 students attended the Energy Challenge event in the hall.

Energy-challenge-1After looking at questions such as ‘What is engineering?’ and ‘Why is an increasing human population a problem’; they began the practical task of working in teams to make and test solar powered cars. At the end of the day two races were held; the accuracy race where their cars had to stop as close to the line as possible and the speed race to see whose car could make it across the hall first. All teams worked hard together, testing their cars and making adjustments to try to claim the prizes.

The winning teams were ‘No Name‘ consisting of Ellie, Dani, Shereen, Hedye and Hrishika from 8-7 and ‘Bob the Builder‘ consisting of Arya, Sara, Imaan and Eisha from 8-1, with their car ‘Winner’.

Computing Trip to Lancaster University

Computing Trip to Lancaster UniOn July the 7th, Years 11 and 12 computer science students spent the day at Lancaster University learning about the design of ‘smart cities’.  Working in teams with university researchers, they built their own model smart city with computerised street lights that responded to darkness and automatic traffic lights.  They also built driver-less ‘robot’ cars that could be steered remotely from a hand-held computer but which also responded to their traffic lights automatically, refusing to move when the lights were red.  The girls learned how design teams for large systems have to work together to define standards and agree methods of communication

Spelling Bee Success, July 2016

Spelling Bee Success, July 2016

On Friday, three year 7 students, Connie, Lavanya and Rose took part in the national finals of the Routes into Languages spelling bee competition in Cambridge. All three girls had worked incredibly hard to prepare for the event. To illustrate their achievement, 100 students were invited to take part in the final from an original field of over 75 000 students. All three acquitted themselves very well in an exceptionally strong field. Connie narrowly missed out on a place in the Spanish last four after a tie-break but we are delighted to report that Lavanya went through to the final round and was crowned national champion for German. Many congratulations to the girls, the teachers who worked with them and their parents for their dedication, commitment and support.

Year 9 – Rymans National Enterprise Final

Year 9 - Rymans National Enterprise Final

The 2016 Ryman National Enterprise Challenge final was held at Doncaster Racecourse, supported by Kingswood, on Wednesday 29th June. The event saw the winning teams from over 120 schools come together to compete against each other. High street retailer and stationery giant, Ryman set students the task of coming up with the best school based business, as their owner and former dragon’s den star Theo Paphitis got his first taste of business at school, whilst running the school tuck shop. ‘Whoops’ from 9-2 who consisted of Isabella, Sarah, Tabitha, Grace, Tiffany and Laura represented the school and did a stirling job, but unfortunately weren’t crowned winners.

The students had a good day though as the event was hosted by children’s TV legends Dick & Dom. There was a guest speech from Michael ‘Eddie’ Edwards aka Eddie the Eagle, ‘Eddie’ who came to the finals to tell his story first hand and to show the students that if you want something enough – then anything really is possible! Theo Paphitis headed up the judging panel and hosted a Q&A with the students.

Well done to: Isabella, Sarah, Tabitha, Grace, Tiffany and Laura.
