Last summer a group of students from year 10 took part in an enterprise competition run by The Manufacturing Institute and sponsored by Kelloggs. This was a local heat and the girls came second which earned them a place in the grand final. They designed a new cereal product.
This final took place on 21st October of this year at Old Trafford Football Ground. The girls were competing against 12 other teams. This time there was a much more complicated brief and the girls had to design an aeroplane. They decided to choose a cargo aeroplane that would be used to deliver exotic fruits and vegetables all around the world. The girls had to set up a company and take on individual roles and responsibilities within their company whilst all working as a team to pull it together. They had to work to a budget, set up a marketing plan, design and build the aeroplane, attend meetings with their customer and pitch the plan to the dragons and an audience of over 100 teachers, students and representatives of manufacturing companies all over the country.
I am very proud to say that the girls were fantastic all day, working together in a mature, creative and confident way and at the end of a very tough judging process that had been going on all day they were announced the winners. Well done to all those who took part.
