Day 1…………next stop Space Centre Houston

Wow!! What a place. Everything is huge (well, we are in Texas).

It’s only 10.45 and we’ve already had an introductory talk and video, a tram tour of the site taking in Mission Control, Saturn Rocket Centre and the Space Station Training Centre. We are now in the classroom to work on the various challenges.

Heat shield building this morning………….

The students are working in teams to build a heat shield for a space capsule. This will be tested so that their egg-stranaut does not get cooked on re-entry into the Earths atmosphere. Other girls are working on preventing a marshmallow from freezing on Mars. This will be tested with liquid nitrogen at -196’C……….all good hands on science and very challenging..

Testing with liquid nitrogen……..cool, eh!

Marshmallows are protected from the liquid nitrogen using various materials the students can “buy”. After only 2mins the before and after temperatures are taken. The one with the smallest temperature change, wins!!!
