Bronze Expedition Success!

Congratulations to the 89 year 9 pupils who recently successfully completed their qualifying expedition for their Bronze award.  The staff who accompanied you were full of praise for the behaviour and attitudes shown.  I have really enjoyed watching your presentations and hearing your stories.

Your next task is to get all of your objectives and dates onto the eDofE website so that I can confirm your success.

Silver Practice Expedition: Letter from Kevin @GRIP

Emergency contact details       Tel: 07980 306869

Dear Parent / Guardian

Your child is due to attend their Duke of Edinburgh Silver Training Expedition this Friday. I’m contacting you to confirm the arrangements. Please note that the drop off point is different to the pick-up point. Please consider sharing lifts to reduce traffic on these narrow roads and parking issues.

Fri morning drop off:

9:30am prompt.

Venue is Linnet Clough Scout Camp in Marple.

Linnet Clough Scout Camp & Activity Centre, Gibb Lane, Mellor, Stockport.  If using SatNav when visiting the site, please use SK6 5PP which takes you to the Devonshire Arms on Longhurst Lane. The campsite is signposted from there.

Sunday afternoon pick up:

4:30pm – please note that the group may arrive earlier than this but they cannot be taken away until their Trainer has dismissed them.

Buxworth Basin,

Brookside, Buxworth, High Peak SK23 7NE

Mobile phones

The Duke of Edinburgh Organisation recommend that we do not allow participants to have mobile phones whilst on expedition (day or night). There are a number of reasons for this:

The participants are encouraged to ‘un-plug’ from the outside world and focus on becoming part of their team by socialising and supporting each other.

Mobile phones don’t stand up well to rain, mud, being crushed in pockets. They run out of charge and there are no charging facilities on campsites.

There is patchy coverage in the countryside, and batteries die and so if you are waiting on a phone call from your young person and don’t receive it or you are trying to ring them to check on them, and they don’t call back – you get anxious for no reason.

For these reasons, we have always run and supervised expeditions in such a way that mobile reception is not required for supervision or safety:

Sometimes it is necessary for me to contact home if a young person takes ill or has forgotten equipment. I have all the emergency contact details that you provided the school with and can contact parents if I need to. You can contact me directly on the number above – please only do this if it is an emergency, and remember, I too will have patchy reception and so may not get straight back to you.

Thanks for your understanding and support.

Gold Training Day 20th June 2016

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Pre Expedition training day Monday, 20thJune.
Start & Finish times: 9:30am prompt until 5pm.
Emergency contact on day: Tel: 07980 306869 | Email:
Venue: Burnage Rugby Club.
Varley Park, Battersea Rd, Stockport SK4 3EA
Participants will need to bring their lunch. There is a sandwich bar nearby.

The school will not be providing transport for this event. The venue is well served by public transport options. East Didsbury Train station and East Didsbury Metro stations are 10 minutes’ walk from the venue. I have planned a slightly later start than school time to allow for this transport.

Kit check
As their first training expedition is fast approaching it is important that the participants have all their equipment ready. They should arrive with everything they will be bringing on the expedition – this will allow the trainer to check its suitability. Quality of footwear, waterproofs and rucksack will be paramount for walking for 18km each day for four days, carrying all their personal and camping equipment. Participants need to come dressed to be outside for some of the day.

Route planning.
A large part of the day will be taken up by planning the route for the Qualifying Expedition. You will need to bring their compasses for this.
