House of Lords ESU Debate

house of lords 2

On Friday 4th Dec selected students in yr 11, 12 & 13 made their way down to London to attend the ESU (English Speaking Union) House of Lords Chamber event. Our students were chosen to represent North West Schools in a debate which explored the question; “should Parliament be more diverse? ”

Alice Bruce in year 12 had the honor of writing a key speech putting forward the view that more should be done to increase diversity in parliament, she presented her case clearly and enthusiastically to an audience of Girl Guides and members of the Three Faiths Forum and the British Humanists.

The floor was then opened for arguments made by other students, our girls managed to catch the attention of Baroness De Souza ( the Lord Speaker) on a number of occasions and passionately shared their ideas.

The day was a fantastic experience to learn more about formal debating and to engage in such an important issue. Some of the conclusions made from the debate were an improvement in political education and to increase the use of quotas when choosing MPS and Lords. A vote was taken and by an overwhelming majority students chose that something should be done. The other options were ; nothing should be done or enforcing change in parliament.

Well done to all the girls involved in this great day.
