Year 9 and 10 linguists enjoyed a talk given by Flight Lieutenant Gemma Slaughter, who works as a linguist for the RAF. There are over 60 jobs in RAF, with only 5% of those employed working with planes. There are lots of opportunities for sport and adventure training, as team building is key. Intelligence linguists are deployed across the world. Translating plays a key role in the peacekeeping role. Language analysis could involve cyber analysis, communication intelligence and surveillance. Pupils enjoyed listening to Gemma’s experiences of using her knowledge of Arabic and Pashto working in Afghanistan. Pupils learnt some key vocabulary in Pashto and used this to interpret a series of messages, saying when and where an attack was due to take place and what type of attack was being.
Honor, Imogen and Kate in 9-5 have been awarded first prize for their entry in the 11-14 song section of the Together: A UK-German centenary project. The project invited pupils aged 9-16 to produce poetry, art work or songs inspired by our shared history with Germany, with an emphasis on hope and unity. They have been invited to receive their certificates at the British Embassy in Berlin on 15th November, with flights and two nights hotel accommodation paid for. It is an amazing achievement and a fabulous prize. We look forward to hearing all about it in November.

- 8-7 Country: Austria, Song: Das Fliegerlied by DONIKKL, Highlights: animal onesies!
On Thursday 14th June, 27 Year 10 pupils travelled with Mrs Ryan and Mrs Stokes to the University of Manchester to explore careers in languages. The day began with a talk about the possible career paths pen to language students before moving on to a creative subtitling task, where pupils wrote subtitles for short films. They then enjoyed a tour of the campus and a taster session in either Japanese or Arabic. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their day.

Tabi and Ant in Year 12 successfully applied for a place on a youth seminar organised by the UK- German connection. This funded a 3 day stay in Berlin for them from 1-3 June, where they worked with 25 German and 23 other English pupils on a joint project, called ‘Finding our place in history’. They took part in a series of workshops based on the book by Thomas Harding, House by the Lake. These explored the themes of identity, reconciliation, our shared future and diversity. They also had the opportunity to explore Berlin.
It is a tremendous achievement to have been successful in gaining a place on this seminar and they are hoping to share their experiences through assemblies and display work.
Well done to both of them!
Year 12 Spanish students took part in the Mother Tongue Other Tongue Poetry Competition, a national project, led by Poet Laureate Dame Carol Ann Duffy, Director of the Manchester Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University in conjunction with Routes into Languages and the British Council. All Year 12 Spanish students submitted poems they had written in Spanish and a shortlist of four was then sent in to the nationwide competition.
Srishti won the KS5 competition with her poem entitled ‘Tras la tormenta’ (Through the Storm) and Sophie received a highly commended prize for her poem entitled ‘Veo belleza’ (I see beauty). Both are beautifully written original poems and the prizes are very well deserved. Huge congratulations to both Srishti and Sophie!
Year 7 students Nirja, Roxy and Jessica went to the regional final of the competition on Thursday 26th April. All three pupils competed to a very high standard and Nirja made it through to the semi-final for French, but unfortunately did not make it through to the final. They have done tremendously well to get this far and were a pleasure to be with this competition.
We got back safely from Granada yesterday afternoon after a very cold and often wet six days… not what you expect in Andalusia! Our programme (organised by our Spanish partner school) was packed with interesting activities; we spent a lot of time working along with representatives from the other schools in the project (Granada, Lille, Augsburg, Riga and Struer in Denmark) on our project theme of technology and the environment, culminating in the making of an artefact from rubbish materials – our students made an aquarium with jellyfish made from plastic bottles and bags. They also took an active role in a group discussion on environmental problems; the work of the project is all being uploaded to a website which we will share with you when it is ready.
We were also able to get a good feel for the culture of Granada and were privileged to visit the Alhambra. Our students stayed with Spanish families, and there were many tears and invitations to visit again when we departed. They were a credit to the school.
Over the last two weeks, pupils have been celebrating the language history and culture of India. This has focussed on our KS3 pupils, with a variety of activities taking place, such as samosa making; jewellery making; sitar playing in assembly; learning new Indian languages; talks about Indian politics, Indian history and Indian religions; Indian dancing; Hinglish; playing Kabaddi and cricket. We are very grateful to departments for coordinating such interesting activities and to the pupils themselves, who have led many of them.
We will be running a variety of activities during the fortnight from 26/2 until 9/3 to celebrate the languages, culture, politics and religions of India.
The activities are as following:

- Sports leaders (Year 10) to teach Kabaddi to KS3 pupils during Wednesday lunchtimes
- Dance- Year 8 as scheme of work, taster through year group clubs to be led by older pupils.
- RS- exploration of Indian religion
- Science society to deliver to Year 7/8 classes- biology- vegetarian diet/ ivory trade, chemistry- chemicals in curry, physics- light and its effect on flag colours
- Maths- study of Indian mathematicians.
- D&T lunchtime Samosa making session; Indian inspired jewellery
- Art- paper cuts club to produce shadow puppets
