Last week saw the culmination of three months hard work on behalf of year 9 and their First Give project. The project has engaged year 9 with local social issues and charities that work to alleviate these issues. Each class had selected one group to represent them in the final. The presentations were fantastic and very creative exploring social issues such as mental health, domestic abuse and loneliness among old people.
The winning team were Manchester Mind gaining £500 for their charity.
All of year 9 should be very proud of their awareness raising and fundraising efforts, they have truly embodied what it means to be active citizens via this year’s project.
On Monday year 8 had a session in the hall with the fantastic youth workers from Brook. The session considered and explored Gender Identity allowing students to engage in productive discussion about the issue and learn different terminologies and the importance of respecting others. The session also explored sexuality and the dangers of homophobia and transphobia and how this can make a person feel. The session was fantastic and year 8 seemed to gain a great deal from the activities and discussions.
Year 9 are currently exploring the topic of risking behaviours in PSHE.. sometimes we have to take risks and consider the consequences. Sometimes we need to know the risks and not put ourselves in the situation. Let’s make healthy good choices and take good risks to grow.
Today is World Mental Health Day, sometimes all we have to do is ask someone how they are. Life is full of so many challenges and sometimes things get a little too much, the stress and pressures of so many things can mean that we feel out of kilter, separate from the world around us. That’s OK, we have to remember that others might be going through things we have no idea about, and with that in mind it’s important not to make assumptions or judgements about others, instead let’s just as three very simple words… “How are you?”
Then it’s about listening, not trying to give advice or put our two piece in, it’s about listening and letting that person talk. So today of all day’s please ask, how are you and really listen to the answer, it could make more of an impact that you can every imagine.
