Year 9 – Rymans National Enterprise Final

NEC

The 2018 Ryman National Enterprise Challenge final was held at The International Centre, Telford on Wednesday 4th July. The event saw the winning teams from over 150 schools come together to compete against each other. High street retailer and stationery giant, Ryman set students the task of creating a new stationary product for the Back to School campaign. The students had to convince the panel that their product would increase revenue and brand awareness. Ready to Rule from 9-5 consisted of Ella, Milly, Mimi, Rose, Mboje, Florrie who represented the school and did themselves and the school proud. The pitch was word perfect and Ella and Mimi performed a fabulous rap as part of their advertising campaign.

The students had a good day as the event was hosted by Diversity dance group – Jordan and Perry. Theo Paphitis headed up the judging panel and hosted a Q&A with the students – “Be inspired by everything around you, use everything as inspiration”.

Well done to Ella, Milly, Mimi, Rose, Mboje, Florrie – we have definitely got some budding entrepreneurs within the school.

Gabriella S Inline Skating Success

Following on from her success at the 2017 World Championships, in Dijon, Gabriella S (Year 11) took part in the 8th World Inline Skating Championships in Cork, Ireland. This year, she competed in the Elite Solo Ice Dance Junior Division (i.e Division 1) having progressed from the 4th Division Junior Ladies and had to skate two programmes – the first contained two compulsory pattern dances – the Starlight Waltz and the Paso Doble (both dances were based on traditional ballroom dances but were, of course, skated on wheels!). Her second programme was a free dance and she chose to skate to ‘You Raise Me Up’ by Westlife.

Having moved up so many divisions, Gabriella fought off some strong competition not only securing a huge increase to her personal best (nearly doubling the score she got when she won Gold in Madrid a couple of months ago) but also finishing in 4th place overall.

Well done Gabriella!

Dressing Girls Around the World

The Year 11 textiles students have been going global with their community spirit, with their support for the Dress a Girl Around the World project.  Their garment construction skills were tested in the production of the dresses and their skills extended with the addition of Rouleau loops and patch pockets.

The project was started with the aim of providing a dress for every girl around the world who, for whatever reason, is living in abject poverty. Since 2006, the project has delivered over 1 million dresses to 81 countries.

Many thanks to Mr Hunt from Ivyleague (UK) Ltd, for donating the fabric for both the Year 8 and the Year 11 projects.

Comfort Bags

A casual conversation with the County Co-ordinator of the Greater Manchester West Girlguiding Association, resulted in Miss Williams Year 8 textile group enhancing their textile skills by producing 50 drawstring bags. The comfort bags are a local community project and the bags will be filled with combs, soaps, toothbrushes/toothpaste, pens etc. that have been sourced from local suppliers. The filled bags will then be given to hospital visitors who, for whatever reason, have not been able to collect these items from home for themselves. Well done to Year 8 and the handful of Year 9 students, who also volunteered to support the project.

Many thanks to Mr Hunt from Ivyleague (UK) Ltd, for donating the fabric for both the Year 8 and the Year 11 projects.

It was a beautiful summers evening, very well attended with many proud parents and friends of the Year 13 students. Again there was a variety of themes and styles on show ranging from portraiture, to chickens to cars and the students skills clearly shone through.
