On Wednesday 5th July, some of the Year 11 students who competed so successfully in the Alan Turing Cryptography Competition, run by the University of Manchester, returned to school to run a cryptography competition of their own. All of year 7 got to hear some of the tips and tricks Helen, Fiona, Miranda, Antonia, Hannah, Katie, Amy and Ellie had learned through the competition and then took part in a competition planned and executed to perfection. Four codes, designed to test the skills of the year 7s revealed the code to a safe, containing prizes for the winning team. One year 7 student said: “We had a great time breaking the codes- I didn’t realise it could be so much fun!”
A Pride parade that has been held though central London attracted 10,000s of supporters. Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London describes the celebration of Pride as a wonderful and love-filled event to bring happiness to the community amongst the tradegy of recent weeks.

Congratulations to our new team of head girls, who have recently been appointed following a rigorous application process. The roles have changed this year and the head girls will now lead the seven main student groups that work throughout the school. We were extremely impressed with the calibre of the candidates, in every step of the application process. Applicants were a credit to themselves and the school and it was a difficult decision to select only seven students. We are very much looking forward to working with our new team next year and developing these roles further.

On Thursday 6th July, the year 10 GCSE drama students performed pieces from 6 different plays as part of their GCSE course. All of the extracts were taken from plays that had adapted pre- twentieth century novels and gave the students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of creative adaptation as a style and use some of the techniques they had seen expertly used by Kneehigh theatre company on our recent trip to London. Costumed in a range of top hats, tail coats and Victorian skirts, the students provided a very entertaining evening with outstanding performances. The extracts included Great Expectations, Emma, Jane Eyre, The Hounds of the Baskerville, Little Women and Oliver Twist. Excellent marks were achieved by all. Well done year 10!
The English department were very happy to welcome Rachel McIntyre to AGGS on July 6th. Rachel, who has had three books for teenagers published in the last two years, came to deliver creative writing workshops to year 9 and year 10 and to talk to students in the library. The workshops were fast-paced and engaging. Students learned how to create an original character and how to plot a story. Who knew year 9 had such dark imaginations? Rachel talked to aspiring writers in the library, suggesting ways in which they could develop their writing.

80 girls performed in this annual Summer concert – a smaller event as many of the older girls are not in school, but nevertheless full of variety and quality of performances.
The programme included some very promising Y7 soloists, 3 Y10 GCSE soloists, Saxophone Ensemble, Jazz Band, Junior Choir and String Orchestra. Also Recorder Ensemble and Junior Strings – both led by students.
Many Y11 and Y13 students returned from their study leave to perform in String Orchestra and Recorder Ensemble. The former’s programme of very high calibre, with Anna T (Y11 and studying singing at the Junior RNCM) performing a Handel aria, accompanied by the String Orchestra, and a piece composed by a former parent, Adrienne Spilsbury (mother of Cerys and Ffion).
Junior Choir performed a 10 min fun cantata : Rooster Rag, describing the entertaining journey of a hen, rooster and cunning fox, using solos/choruses and some entertaining images on the screen. Thanks go to the Art Dpt for excellent masks and also the caretaking team, reprographics, staff helpers and PTA/World Challenge team for all of their support, without whom we could not put these kind of events on.
As a GCSE Citizenship student, it was my pleasure to be able to channel my keen interest in Politics in a day of work experience – shadowing my local MP.
I’d honestly no idea what I was going to be doing there – if I’d mainly be with the caseworkers or the MP himself, but I was excited to find out.
Mike Kane is the Labour MP for Wythenshawe and Sale East and is also the Shadow Minister for Schools and he is also my local MP. Mr Kane was re-elected in the recent election with 62.2 % of the vote share. I was able to campaign with Mike Kane during the election campaign and was delighted to enter his MP’s surgery for work experience on Friday, 30 June to experience an MP’s and an MP’s caseworker’s work.
I started the day at 10:00am with my first job of the day – sifting through the post – stamping and checking through each and every letter, invitation, leaflet etc. all coming from a variety of sources, including a local primary school and different constituents. The letters from the primary school were from year 6 pupils who were writing to their MP about food wastage so it was very encouraging to see children so young getting involved and taking action about issues they are passionate about – something everyone should strive to do. Then, after Mr Kane had finished with his advice surgery meetings, I went through all the printed emails and letters in his in-tray with him, which was an enlightening experience. As an MP, Mike can get several 100s of letters in his in tray and it is a caseworker’s job to filter through them all before passing them over to the MP. MPs get many invitations from different organisations to different events and meetings so it can get incredibly busy for them. As all Parliamentary Select Committees were dissolved for the Election, MPs are currently trying to gain support from other MPs by sending them letters as to why they should be the new Chair of a specified Select Committee. Although, one of these MPs seemed to have forgot to write their name on the letter and so one of my jobs was to do some detective work and find out who it was (the signature was undecipherable).
After that, I entered some details from the letters I had opened into the computer which had a system for recording the cases of different constituents. I was also proud to be able to help Mr Kane in choosing a question to submit to the government for the Women and Equalities Committee, which was centered on amending the government’s safeguarding policy to better protect girls in schools from sexual assault. To convince him on the topic’s importance, I also wrote a report on sexual assault in schools which outlined suggested amendments and used data to say why they were necessary.
This was an informative and interesting day for me which allowed me to fully grasp an MP’s work- I am definitely considering returning for a longer term of work experience in the future. I think an MP’s job in their local constituency with ordinary civilians, rather than their job in London in the House of Commons, is often overlooked but is incredibly important. People often see their MP as inaccessible but I found that I am now on very good terms with Mike Kane and it is easy to do so. After studying the job of an MP in GCSE Citizenship, I was especially able to understand it by shadowing my own MP for a day. It was an enjoyable experience and I would encourage anyone to contact their own local MP and ask to shadow them, too.
8 x year 10 girls took part in the competition sponsored by Kelloggs They had to design a cereal bar. They had to build a model in the factory they would make it in, set out costings and marketing ideas and then present their pitch to the dragons. They were amazing and we all had a great day developing our understanding of the process of manufacturing, improving our team work and presentation skills. Well done to all of them.
Congratulation to Jorja K from Year 12 who won the School Physicist of the Year award. This is an annual, UK-wide award scheme sponsored by the Ogden Trust and are presented at the University of Manchester.
Each year teachers are invited to nominate their “best” Year 12 physics student. The student put forward by each school receives a School Physicist of the Year award from the Ogden Trust, consisting of a £25 book token and certificate presented at an evening event at the University of Manchester (Thursday 6th July). Receiving a SPOTY award will also qualify the student for the Ogden alumni association, which will give them chances for internships and other schemes if they go on to study physics at university http://ogdentrust.com/alumni-association
