We Love Manchester Emergency Fund Collection

Following the recent terror incident at Manchester Arena, we decided to raise money in school for the We Love Manchester Emergency Fund. To do this, we held charity collection buckets at the end of the year group assemblies to collect any loose change from pupils. This proved to be very successful as we managed to raise an astounding £500 in total! The money raised will be used to provide for those affected by the devastating incident in Manchester and their families at this difficult time. We would like to thank everyone for their donations!

Engineering Day

Engineering Day, June 2017
Engineering Day, June 2017

On Thursday 70 year 8 students spent the day as engineers. They first learnt about how our growing human population means non-renewable resources will run out and we need to think of creative ways to generate enough energy without impacting any more on the environment. They used the knowledge they had gained to recommend a source of energy for a particular country. Then in teams they spent time building and charging a solar powered car with which to race against the other teams. This took much alteration of the components and design for it to work effectively and they showed great teamwork skills. At the end of the day the winning teams’ car went so far it had to be turned round at the end of the racetrack! The students involved had a great time and we hope they may be inspired to think about engineering as a future career.

AGGS Mock Election Hustings

The year 10 GCSE group and the AGGS Politics society have joined forces and hosted a Hustings for our Mock General Election here at AGGS today.

The hustings took place yesterday and saw members from the five main political parties delivering speeches and being questioned by students. This was a great way to engage young people in political issues and to demonstrate that young people do have a voice.

Well done to all those involved and good luck to all the candidates today. We will be comparing and contrasting stats from our own election to those of the UK General Election tomorrow at Politics society.

Year 9 First Give Winners

First Give Final, 42 Street, 2017

We are so pleased to announce that this year’s 9 charity project was won by students in 9-3 and the charity was 42nd Street. Karina from 42nd was in the audience as the winners were announced and she was so pleased and proud of the students and their hard work.

This year AGGS has been the first school outside of London and Wales to participate in the First Give programme. We have run a similar programme every year for 5 years which as seen a huge amount of money go to some amazing worthwhile causes across Manchester.

The whole of year 9 work on a creative presentation and we do a form time semi final round in which one group per form is chosen by their peers to present at the grand final. This year’s grand final was judged by the director of First Give, Ms Gill and a member of the school PTA. Everyone was astounded at the high standard of all of the presentations. The 9-3 group stood out for it’s incredible video tackling issues of mental health.

42nd is a Manchester based charity working tirelessly to help young people deal with the complexities of modern life ranging from drug abuse to mental health. We and First Give are very pleased to award a total of £700 to this incredible charity. We hope all the students in year 9 continue their efforts to raising awareness and money for so many worthy causes.

When You Wish Upon A Star

When You Wish Upon A Star
When You Wish Upon A Star

This year in the Charity Committee we have arranged a series of events to raise money. These included Charity Day, where we had a talent show, a pantomime and lots of stalls packed full with games and food. This whole day was a huge success and we raised an amazing £3,400!

We also held a pancake sale which went down incredibly well and showed itself to be extremely popular as we raised a super £250!

There have been a number of bake sales over the year in which we have always raised a very good sum of money. This year we have raised a staggering total of £7000 of which we presented a cheque worth £1000 to a charity named When You Wish Upon A Star.

When You Wish Upon A Star is a very worthwhile charity who work to grant the wishes of children living with terminal illnesses. They believe that every child deserves to smile and these wishes allow the family to put their child’s illness on hold as they have fun and create precious memories.
