Congratulations to our GCSE and A level students who showcased performances and compositions at our Senior Recital – ready for coursework submission at the end of this term. Several of our Y13 students are looking forward to visiting The Manchester Grammar School next week, with their string quartets, ready to be critiqued by Manchester University’s resident Danel’s quartet – a vital part in the compositional process in hearing music performed live.

Congratulations also to Chamber Choir who performed Howard Goodall’s ‘Out of the Deep’ based on a setting of Psalm 30 and Sarah Quartel’s ‘Songbird’. And also to String Orchestra who performed JS Bach’s A minor violin concerto, with Chi-Yu Yu as soloist.

Some excellent singing and playing all round – well done!

Y7 Bridgewater Hall trip to hear the Hallé Orchestra perform

Every Y7 attended a very enjoyable annual Halle concert at the Bridgewater Hall, linking to the SOW on orchestral instruments. The theme this year was ‘Music from the British Isles’ and they heard an excellent performance of Britten ‘Young Person’s Guide to the orchestra’.

This was an opportunity to take the entire year group to the Bridgewater Hall , which is one of the best concert halls in the UK, as many of the students have not been there ever before.

Y8 – Opera workshop

Y8 Opera workshop
Y8 Opera workshop

All students in Y8 really enjoyed this annual workshop, showcasing Impromptu opera – a fantastic trio of professional opera singers/pianist, who showcase live operatic demonstrations, specifically linked to the Magic Flute opera – a topic Y8s study this term. The workshop is full of humour, audience singing participation and breaks down all potential pre-conceptions about opera not being fun/for all. Many girls enthuse about this topic/workshop as being their favourite topic in Y8 and many are inspired to join one of the choirs/persuade their parents to take them to an opera!

Y7 – Sign to Sing Session

Sign 2 Sing 2017

All Y7s participated in a whole year group singing session, where they learned to sing and use sign language a lovely song, provided by the Sign to sing charity. Girls were invited to bring a voluntary donation for the charity and were made aware of the work the charity does to promote musical opportunities with those who can’t fully hear. One of our instrumental practice rooms is incidentally named after the brilliant percussionist, Evelyn Glennie, who is deaf.
