Please sponsor our fab teams of Marathon Running Superheroes !!
In less than two weeks’ time, on Sunday 8th April 2018, seven superhero members of staff and two brave Year 8 mums, are running in the Manchester Marathon, to help raise much needed funds for our school.

We have two teams of four, running the course as a relay – and Mr Armstrong is leaving his physics department to run the marathon in full (and hopefully will get a fantastic new PB time!).
Team A consists of Mrs Ogunmyiwa (Vice Principal & PTA Chair), Mr Berry (School Business & Finance Manager), Mrs Cleary (Assistant Vice Principal) and Mrs Walker (Assistant Vice Principal).
Team G (The Legs) have runners Mrs Reynolds (Head of PE), Ms Payne (Art Teacher & Year 10 Senior Tutor), Sarah Hocking (Evie’s mum, Year 8) and Nicola Stanley (Isobel‘s mum, Year 8).

Not only are these brave runners setting a fabulous example to our children and students at the school, they are hoping that all the lovely parents, friends and local companies will show their support and dig deep and sponsor them.

All money raised will go to AGGS PTA to help us buy much needed equipment and help fund educational needs for our school. Previous PTA purchases include a new fridge for food technology, picnic benches, PH monitors for science, headphones and keyboards for the music rooms, beanbags in the library, mirrors for Dance .. the list goes on. In addition, the PTA is funding for the first time this year, the end of year merit trips and also the badges for the rewards assembly; we also hope to finish the infamous ‘ledge’.

Thank you to our runners for supporting us on our wild idea, conceived in the school dining hall; we truly appreciate your time, in both running and training for this.

Thank you PTA for the Fridge

We just want to say thank you to the PTA for the new fridge which arrived on Wednesday

Beanbags in the Library

We are extremely grateful to have received from the PTA, a set of Fatboy Point Beanbags for the library.  This has provided some much needed extra flexible seating for pupils.  Pupil Librarians chose the colours to fit in with the school colours and they chose well; the beanbags have added a touch of extra cheer to the space.

A Huge Thank You from the Drama Department

This year the PTA have funded the purchase of a new set of lights and a harlequin floor cloth for the drama studio. The extra lights mean that a more sophisticated range of lighting effects can be achieved in the studio and this is enhanced by the harlequin floor which enables the classroom to become a ‘black-box studio’, in which the lights are intensified. So far this has had a huge impact on the students, particularly at KS4 and KS5 as the new equipment has worked to enhance their practical examination performances. At KS3, the girls are now able to experiment with a wider range of lighting states and colours to enrich their work in lessons. A huge thank you to the PTA for their continued support of the Drama department. Below are some images of the GCSE and A-Level work that has been performed this term.

Free Books for Year 7

Free books from PTAHappy faces all round for 7-5 when they received their free books this week. For the last 4 years the PTA have funded this very popular scheme of a gift of a reading book to every Year 7 student. After choosing a book in February, the books have finally arrived and with the addition of a book plate they are now being distributed within library lessons. The anticipation and the excitement of receiving their books confirms the importance of this scheme in promoting literacy and the love of reading.

All the Year 7 students and the Library say a huge thank you to the PTA for their generosity.

British Council International School Award success for AGGS

ISA-marks-2015-2018AGGS has been reaccredited with the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of its work to bring the world into the classroom.

The International School Award is a badge of honour for schools that do outstanding work in international education, such as through links with partner schools overseas. Fostering an international dimension in the curriculum is at the heart of the British Council’s work with schools, so that young people gain the cultural understanding and skills they need to live and work as global citizens.

Our international work includes the Comenius project with schools in Latvia, Denmark and Spain and our longstanding links with schools in Japan and South Africa. The school has  also examined global issues as in the Science and Sustainability project, as well as holding the PTA international evening. Other initiatives include participation in the Model UN and a number of modern languages cross-curricular programmes.

The adjudicators were impressed by the breadth of the school’s international work and said it was a ‘shining example’ of what can be achieved.

The International School Award encourages and supports schools to develop:

  • An international ethos embedded throughout the school
  • A majority of pupils within the school impacted by and involved in international work
  • Collaborative curriculum-based work with a number of partner schools
  • Curriculum-based work across a range of subjects
  • Year-round international activity
  • Involvement of the wider community
