Professor Brian Cox’s new Physics Lecture room

It was interesting to see how all the planning and design had all come together to provide an impressive new £7.8 million state of the art physics department, complete with a modern lecture room for Professor Brian Cox to hold his physics lectures. The students got to meet the Construction Manager of the University, Simon and were shown round the site by Darrell, the Senior Build Manager and Apprentice, Bethany O’Neill, who was an excellent and enthusiastic role model for women in the construction industry. Y11 Willmott Dixon Site VisitBethany explained about the many different roles for women in construction and in particular her apprenticeship route as a Quantity Surveyor with Willmott Dixon. The students also got to see the Brunswick Park site which is going to be a lovely park area for the university students to walk through and saw the intricate laying of the Portugese style paving. The students asked lots of interesting questions and got to complete an online quiz about which sector in construction they would be most suited to. We would like to thank Willmott Dixon for putting together such an excellent site visit programme and for providing lunch.

The students all from 11-5 were: Oliva, Poppy, Diana, Imogen, Caitlin and Natasha.

Make it! Challenge, June 2017

8 x year 10 girls took part in the competition sponsored by Kelloggs They had to design a cereal bar. They had to build a model in the factory they would make it in, set out costings and marketing ideas and then present their pitch to the dragons. They were amazing and we all had a great day developing our understanding of the process of manufacturing, improving our team work and presentation skills. Well done to all of them.

Siemens Rollercoaster Challenge 2017

Siemens Enterprise31 year 9 students had an introductory presentation to the Siemens Rollercoaster Challenge which we are competing in this year. The challenge has been developed to provide a fun, inspiring, informative and hands on activity for students in years 7,8,& 9 to help develop an understanding of the physics and mechanics required to design, build, test and race their very own miniature Rollercoaster! We have 6 teams who are battling it out to represent AGGS at the finals in July. The students have until 22nd June to design and build the rollercoaster using the kit supplied. We are going to be asking parents and students at the Open Evening on 22nd June to vote for their favourite. Good Luck to all teams.

Last Friday the members of Illuminate; Orla, Ibby, Rose and Amy (8-6) visited UKFast in Manchester to find out if it would be possible to bring Illuminate – their cyberbullying support website to life.

Aaron Saxton (Director of Training and Learning) gave us a tour of the premises and explained how UKFast has become one of the UK’s leading managed hosting and colocation providers to some of Britain’s best-loved brands. We even had the opportunity to meet Lawrence Jones again (Co-owner of UKFast) who showed us around his office and expressed how enthusiastic he is about the project. One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity to have a go on the slide!

WILLMOTT DIXON – School Enterprise Day

Willmott Dixon ran an Enterprise day at AGGS on 22nd November to the whole of Year 8 (205 students). “The Willmott Dixon enterprise day is designed to encourage employability skills, whilst highlighting curriculum links to the construction industry” this day definitely delivered that! The long term goal of the enterprise day is to help raise awareness of careers in construction for female students, ahead of their college course/education selection; again it delivered on this as a lot of the students commented that they have a better understanding of careers available within the construction industry.

WILLMOTT DIXON - School Enterprise Day
WILLMOTT DIXON – School Enterprise Day

During the morning the groups completed 3 team building tasks and were awarded points not only for the result but also how well they communicated together and worked as a team. The points were then totalled and this was then used to work out their budget for the build of a new school.

Each group had to calculate how many classrooms they needed; receptions, staff rooms, sports facilities; swimming pool etc. They then used the costing sheets to calculate how much their school would cost. It was a very fraught day especially when disaster struck at lunchtime and they had to spend £4,000,000 in order to fix the problem.

Each of the groups had to present their ideas to the judges and an overall winner was chosen. The winning group were from 8-1 and consisted of Julie, Francesca, Alicia, Aleeza, Rebecca, and Abeer. Lydia from 8-7 was commended for her leadership and motivation of the group during the task. In January they will all have the opportunity go to a site which Willmott Dixon are currently building.

We look forward to working with Willmott Dixon again as it was a fantastic day and all of the students enjoyed it but more importantly they not only built on their enterprise skills but also learnt about possible careers.

Year 9 – Rymans National Enterprise Final

Year 9 - Rymans National Enterprise Final

The 2016 Ryman National Enterprise Challenge final was held at Doncaster Racecourse, supported by Kingswood, on Wednesday 29th June. The event saw the winning teams from over 120 schools come together to compete against each other. High street retailer and stationery giant, Ryman set students the task of coming up with the best school based business, as their owner and former dragon’s den star Theo Paphitis got his first taste of business at school, whilst running the school tuck shop. ‘Whoops’ from 9-2 who consisted of Isabella, Sarah, Tabitha, Grace, Tiffany and Laura represented the school and did a stirling job, but unfortunately weren’t crowned winners.

The students had a good day though as the event was hosted by children’s TV legends Dick & Dom. There was a guest speech from Michael ‘Eddie’ Edwards aka Eddie the Eagle, ‘Eddie’ who came to the finals to tell his story first hand and to show the students that if you want something enough – then anything really is possible! Theo Paphitis headed up the judging panel and hosted a Q&A with the students.

Well done to: Isabella, Sarah, Tabitha, Grace, Tiffany and Laura.
