AGGS Christmas Concert 2017

Christmas Concert 2017
Christmas Concert 2017

This year’s Christmas concerts showcased a record number of students – over 260 in total – as usual performing a wide variety of music from Howard Blake’s ‘The Snowman’, performed by Junior Choir and String Orchestra to the Jazz Band’s cover of ‘Feeling Good’, starring Y12 singer Effi-Nicki S.

All 16 ensembles/choirs/orchestras/bands were featured across 2 evenings, to packed halls and there was a lovely festive atmosphere, complete with Christmas tree and tinselled instruments – the most ingenious being Faith Edwards’ french horn, literally lit up with fairy lights!

Thanks as usual go to all performers, who dedicate so much of their free time to practising and attending rehearsals, to all staff and Sixth-Form student ensemble leaders who direct them. Also to the Art Department for some fantastic art work on the programmes, Mrs Brennan in Reprographics, the caretaking staff and PTA for providing refreshments. We also could not put on such evenings without the generous support of staff who supervise students during the concert.

Thankyou to all!

Find your inner Elf

1 in 4 local children are living in poverty.

Please help us make their Christmas Day special this year.
In 2016 we made Christmas special for over 61,800 local children, and we want to do even more this year.

Find Your Inner Elf

We’re asking you to buy an extra present that we can give to a disadvantaged local child to make their Christmas morning special. We need new and unwrapped gifts suitable for children and young people aged 0-18 years, and you can donate at our drop off points across the region.
Room 1 year 10-7 IS YOUR CLOSEST DROP OFF POINT!

Together we can make a difference to local children this Christmas.

Reverse Advent Challenge

Form 7-5 are going to be completing the ‘Reverse Advent Challenge’: Each day, during Advent, they will be asked to bring in donations for the local Food Bank.

If your child would like to donate any items, please leave them in the RS office, RM9. Mr Humphrys will collect them and send them to the Foodbank on their behalf.

Here are a list of things currently needed by the Foodbank:

Christmas Cheer at AGGS

Matt Haig Attending a Book Signing for Primary School Pupils from BFET and locallyChristmas came early to AGGS this week with a festive visit from the best-selling author Matt Haig.  Matt is the author of several novels for adults and children, and his new book, Father Christmas and Me, is the third title in his bestselling Christmas series, following A Boy Called Christmas and The Girl Who Saved Christmas (Canongate).

Matt Haig Attending a Book Signing for Primary School Pupils from BFET and locally200 pupils and staff from the 3 BFET primary schools, Stanley Grove Primary Academy, Rushbrook Primary Academy, Marton Primary Academy and a local school, Bowdon Preparatory School, beat the weather and traffic to meet the author and hear all about his new book.  Matt entertained everyone with tales of Father Christmas, Mother Christmas, their adopted human daughter Amelia and cat, Captain Soot.  Elfhelm, where they all live, is a magical place, where the houses are made of gingerbread and the local currency is chocolate gold coins.

Matt Haig Attending a Book Signing for Primary School Pupils from BFET and locallyThe spirit of Christmas soon filled the Hall as pupils took to the stage, changed into elf outfits, told Christmas jokes and lead a Christmas sing-song.  Father Christmas’s Barometer of Hope (a key device in the story) soon zoomed to its maximum reading –  So. Much. Hope. Nothing is Impossible. Magic is Real. Christmas Will Happen!

It was a delight to welcome so many inquisitive and enthusiastic primary school pupils into our school.

Thanks to Waterstones Deansgate Manchester for the opportunity.

Charity day 2016

Charity day was an enormous success!
Beginning with the year 13 pantomime we saw students being put to the test at AGGS -with the prize of an “Alty boy” if they survived! Challenges ranged from cakes in food tech to getting past the one way system and Donald Trump. Teachers and students enjoyed it and the song was the perfect end. Continue reading Charity day 2016
