Today, the AGGS Carol Service took place at St. Mary’s Church. The music was beautiful and the church was decorated by 3D white and glitter stars, made by Year 7 and 8 art clubbers.
The members AGGS String Orchestra did themselves and the school proud last Friday. They played absolutely brilliantly; the best we have ever heard.
Though they weren’t nominated for a special award, out of the 6 other string or chamber orchestras performing, our girls comprised the only string orchestra nationally from just one single school. All the other orchestras were either from music service hubs, or combined schools, therefore with a much larger catchment of players, and where more rehearsal time is available.
We had a lovely day and the standard of every orchestra was exceptionally high; the adjudicators were also excellent and gave everyone really useful feedback and suggestions. So we have come home with more ideas, including additional repertoire.
Thanks must go not only to the dedication and hard work of all the girls, but mainly to Janet Janes, the string orchestra director, who also teaches most of the violinists who played in the orchestra.
AGGS String Orchestra have again won through to the National Finals of Music For Youth with their exciting programme which included Britten and Bartok. This ensemble is led brilliantly by Mrs Janet Janes, also violin and viola teacher at AGGS and includes advanced and committed string players from Y8 to Y13.
The girls will play their national final programme in the Adrian Boult Hall in Birmingham on Fri 10 July, competing against the top string orchestras and ensembles in the country.
If you would like to hear the orchestra perform, they will be playing their 15 minute programme in the AGGS Summer Serenade during the evening Monday 6th July. Tickets available from Reception.
Good luck girls!
This term’s Spring concert saw 195 students performing to a packed hall of parents, where a huge variety of music was heard, from 1st Orchestra playing a movement from a Haydn symphony to Junior Choir singing a wonderful arrangement of ‘Fernando’.
Twelve extracurricular music choirs/orchestras/bands/ensembles performed, of which over half were led by AGGS students. Three outstanding solo singers also performed (Anna T, Eleanor W, Annie S) , showcasing music they performed as part of the Suzanne Fischer masterclass in February.
The quality of all the music that evening was fantastic and many parents and staff were very complimentary.
Well done girls!
