The day began with a talk about the possible career paths pen to language students before moving on to a creative subtitling task, where pupils wrote subtitles for short films. UK-German Connection

MFL German ConnectionTabi and Ant in Year 12 successfully applied for a place on a youth seminar organised by the UK- German connection. This funded a 3 day stay in Berlin for them from 1-3 June, where they worked with 25 German and 23 other English pupils on a joint project, called ‘Finding our place in history’. They took part in a series of workshops based on the book by Thomas Harding, House by the Lake. These explored the themes of identity, reconciliation, our shared future and diversity. They also had the opportunity to explore Berlin.

It is a tremendous achievement to have been successful in gaining a place on this seminar and they are hoping to share their experiences through assemblies and display work.

Well done to both of them!

Augsburg Exchange

Augsburg Exchange 2018

We arrived back safely last night at midnight from the Augsburg exchange. Students stayed with host families and took part in 4 days’ work experience in a variety of placements, including schools, a fair trade shop, the tourist information office, a lawyer and an architect. They really enjoyed experiencing German culture at first hand and benefited hugely from the opportunity to practise their German, both in the workplace and with their partners.

Year 13s at the Modern Languages Debating Competition

Year 13 Modern Languages Debating TeamOn Thursday 16th November, Ms Gill, Miss Benson, Mrs Ryan and Mrs McIntosh accompanied three teams of Year 13 language students (French, German and Spanish) at the Northern Schools’ Modern Languages Debating Competition at Cheadle Hulme School. It was only the second time that AGGS entered, having won the Spanish finals at last year’s competition. The students debated topics such as “Success is the source of happiness” and “Wars are unavoidable” in their foreign languages against teams from schools including, MGS, Withington, Bolton, Connell and QEGS Blackburn.

All three teams did well, with the German team (Lybah H and Alisha M) winning one of their two debates, but losing narrowly to the overall winners of the heats, Stockport Grammar. Our Spanish team (Alycia A and Anya S) fought well, but lost out in the semi-finals. Our French team (Celine B and Emily L) battled fiercely, ultimately coming runners up to Bolton Girls in the final, but taking home books for second place.

Visit from Manchester University

MFL Manchester University Visit

On Monday 6th November we were delighted to welcome Sonja Bernhard, School Liaison Officer, from the University of Manchester. She delivered a couple of talks to our Year 9 students about the value of language learning and they were very interested to hear of Sonja’s experiences as a native German speaker living and working in Manchester. She also spoke to Year 12 as part of careers week and shared lots of advice about combining language study with other subjects at university. The students were able to appreciate that language learning not only involves acquiring vocabulary but also gives us an understanding of the culture of other countries.

Germany Trip, October 2017

Germany Trip, October 2017

Over half term, 40 pupils from year 9 visited Germany. The aim was to give pupils a taste of German culture and for them to practise their German in authentic settings. They had a fantastic time exploring Koblenz, Trier and Rüdesheim and particularly enjoyed the trip to Phantasialand, a theme park. We also managed to fit in three cable car rides in four days! The pupils’ behaviour was superb and was commented on by our coach driver and the hotel staff. Gut gemacht!

Eurovision 2017

On Monday 17 July, all year 8 students took part in the annual MFL Eurovision competition. This involves learning a song in French, German and Spanish and performing it from memory. The standard of the competition was very high, with wonderful costumes, great singing and some very impressive choreography. The acts were interspersed by some performances from our year 10 language leaders and our year 12 language students. 8-2, representing Spain, were crowned winners for their performance of Alvaros Soler’s El Mismo Sol. Congratulations to all our participants! ¡Felicidades! Gut gemacht! Félicitations!

Maths/MFL Roadshow

Math/MFL Roadshow, June 2017
Math/MFL Roadshow, June 2017

On Thursday close to seventy Year 8 and Year 9 pupils from seven different schools across the area (including AGGS, Cedar Mount and MCA) got together in the AGGS main hall for the Maths/MFL Roadshow. The hall was alive with activity and conversation as the pupils set to solving maths problems in pairs. The extra challenge was that all the problems were written in French, Spanish or German! Pupils worked really well together, some even managed to work out problems in languages they weren’t studying. There were some very helpful Year 10 students from AGGS present to help out when the going got tough and to check answers when success had been achieved.

Thank you to everyone who helped out in any way to make the event run so smoothly, we will hope to be running a similar Roadshow next year.’
