MMU A Level Translation Competition Success

Francesca and Tania – A Level Spanish Translation Competition Success, MMU

Y12 Spanish took part in the Manchester Metropolitan University A-Level translation competition this year, and we are delighted that out of a number of entries from many different schools, both of our shortlisted entries won. Francesca B won the first prize and Tania T received the Second Prize.

The translation task was to produce an English version of a well-known song by top Spanish hip-hop singer El Chojín, who has a very high profile not just in his home country but throughout Latin America. The competition aimed to promote language learning through song lyrics, introducing A-Level students to the challenges of the translation of songs, and encourage them to engage with topical social issues and popular culture in Spanish.

Both Francesca and Tania were praised for their hard work and effort, which is testimony to their ability and to their passion for Spanish.

CyberFirst Girls Competition

GCHQ CyberFirst CompetitionGCHQ has introduced a new competition to encourage more females into cyber-security; presently there is only 20% of females in the profession.

The competition was open to 13-15 year old females and they had a week to answer as many questions as they could across four categories, cryptography, cyber-security, logic and coding and networking. Thirteen teams of 4 people volunteered to take part from Year 9 and Year 10.

The results of the competition were released on Monday 13th March, and unfortunately we were not shortlisted. The team which has completed the most challenges within school is “Bits please” consisting of Rebecca, Lucy, Jemma and Nadia.

Languages success

AGGS MFL success at Northern Schools Debating Competition, 17 Nov 2016On Thursday 17th November, Miss Benson, Mrs Garcia and Mrs Crowson took three teams of Year 13 language students (French, German and Spanish) to the Northern Schools Debating Competition at Cheadle Hulme School.  It was the first time that AGGS has entered, and the girls had to debate topics such as “Give me knowledge, not money” and “Numbers are better than letters” in their foreign language against teams from schools including MGS, Manchester High, Withington and QEGS Blackburn. All three teams did well, the German team (Sophie-Jo G and Emma R) reaching the semi-final, where they lost narrowly to Manchester High on “Brexit is the answer.” Our French team (Rowena O and Arisha H) acquitted themselves well, too.

Our Spanish team (Sophie H and Hannah D) won their Brexit semi-final, and faced Cheadle Hulme in a debate for which they had 15 minutes’ preparation on “We should all learn a universal language.” The standard of the Spanish was ver high, and after long deliberations Sophie and Hannah were announced the winners.  As well as books and a shield, they each won the fabulous prize of a week’s work experience in Spain!

Senior Maths Team Challenge – Victory!

UKMTFor the third consecutive year our senior maths team has won the North West Regional finals of the UKMT Senior Team Mathematics Challenge at the University of Manchester.

They beat off competition from 28 other schools from across the North West and will travel to London to take on the best teams from around the country.

This is an amazing achievement for Rebecca, Tokino, Zoe and Jorja who have given up many lunchtimes and even after school to train for this event.

A special thanks must also go to Mrs Malkin for all her hard work in training, preparing and selecting the team.

Good luck for them in London!

Transbee Success

Transbee Success 2016

Our year 9 girls performed incredibly well at the Transbee competition in Cambridge on Wednesday.  Isobella, Sophie and Megan performed really well in French, Sneha in 9-5 won second prize for French, Ella in 9-7 won second prize for Spanish and Alcina in 9-7 won first prize for Spanish. This was a national translating competition, so they have done tremendously well.

Chemistry Olympiad Success!

Royal Society of ChemistryThis year we had six enthusiastic Year 13 students taking part in the competition, which involved them completing a two-hour written exam paper. The questions posed often stimulate much debate, and enthusiasm for, chemistry – raising awareness of what the subject is all about. It provides a good opportunity to develop some of the skills required for study at university and beyond.

We are extremely pleased with the results that the students have achieved: Lydia R and Dawnya B both achieved a Gold Award, and Clare Z, Clarissa C, Emily C and Candice H all achieved a Silver Award.  Well done and congratulations to them!

STEM Club Success

STEM-club - chocolate making projectSTEM-clubs

We have come as ‘Highly Commended’ in a STEM club competition for the activity we were running in the lead up to National STEM Clubs Week. Despite the large numbers of high quality submissions the judges were most impressed with our entry, and we are to receive a certificate acknowledging our achievement.

See below the entry from our STEM club for the STEM club week competition:

Initially, the students designed their moulds on computers using a CAD program. Their designs were then laser-cut in two layers which students sanded down and then built up into a former. The following week students created their moulds using the vacuum-former and then melted and poured their chocolate.

Well done to the girls and staff who helped.

Spelling Bee Success

Spelling bee success, February 2016Congratulations to the year 7 pupils who took part in the school round of the spelling bee competition. The girls competed to an extremely high standard and two girls took part in a nail-biting tie-breaker to determine the third finalist. Lavanya, Rose and Connie have all qualified to represent the school in the regional stage of competition in March. Buene suerte! Viel Gluck!
