WILLMOTT DIXON Enterprise Day – What would be your ideal school?

Y8 Wilmott Dixon Enterprise Day

Last week Willmott Dixon ran an Enterprise day for the whole of Year 8. “The Willmott Dixon enterprise day is designed to encourage employability skills, whilst highlighting curriculum links to the construction industry” this day definitely delivered that! The long term goal of the enterprise day is to help raise awareness of careers in construction for female students, ahead of their college course/education selection; again it delivered on this as a lot of the students commented that they have a better understanding of careers available within the construction industry.

Y8 Wilmott Dixon Enterprise DayDuring the morning the groups completed 3 team building tasks and were awarded points not only for the result but also how well they communicated together and worked as a team. The points were then totalled and this was then used to work out their budget for the build of a new school.

Y8 Wilmott Dixon Enterprise DayEach group had to calculate how many classrooms they needed; receptions, staff rooms, sports facilities; swimming pool etc. They then used the costing sheets to calculate how much their school would cost. It was a very fraught day especially when disaster struck mid- morning and due to budget cuts they had to reduce costs by 30%!

Y8 Wilmott Dixon Enterprise DayEach of the groups had to present their ideas to a panel of judges and an overall winner was chosen. The winning group were from 8-3 and consisted of Amalie, Grace, Shreya, Isobel and Niya. Their prize was an Amazon voucher each and they will have the opportunity to visit a site which Willmott Dixon are currently building.

Y8 Wilmott Dixon Enterprise DayWe look forward to working with Willmott Dixon again as it was a fantastic day and all of the students enjoyed it. More importantly they not only built on their enterprise skills but also learnt about possible careers for women in construction.

BFET Arts Day

Our very first BET Arts Day was a great success! The day took place at z-arts and allowed students from all of our BFET schools to come together to participate in workshops in the Arts. Our Year 10 dance and drama students took part in workshops in art, dance, drama, music and physical theatre which culminated in a showing of the work created. 5 of our Year 10 students devised and led the AGGS workshop, teaching students physical theatre skills. They were a real credit to the school and led with confidence, demonstrating outstanding leadership skills. Well done!

What a brilliant day for everyone involved. What a great way to celebrate and promote the arts in our schools, be creative and explore the arts.

Sprung!

Congratulations to all the dancers who performed in SPRUNG. All GCSE students showed their stunning practical work; including performance duets, choreographies and set phrases. The evening was an opportunity for friends and family to see the hard work that had gone into their GCSE practical studies. Well done dancers! A special thank you to non-GCSE students who gave up their time to rehearse and perform in GCSE choreographies.

Professor Lord Winston Visit

On Wednesday 25th April we were extremely lucky to have Professor Lord Robert Winston visit AGGS to speak to the whole of Y10 plus Y12 biology and psychology students. He gave a fascinating lecture that covered a wide range of topics, including the importance of failure and perseverance in scientific research, the collaboration required between the different sciences in order to drive progress, the evolution of humans and their future plus genetic technologies and the ethics of their practice in modern medicine. He also joined a smaller discussion group after school to discuss these issues and more with some keen Year 11, 12 and 13 students. We are extremely grateful for his time and energy and hope he has inspired the students to consider a broad range of scientific careers in their future.

What are you like?…

I really enjoy the year 8 exam project because I get to find out a little bit more about my students and their hobbies. The project becomes so personal and individual and thats one of the reasons Art is so great….we can tailor projects to the individual and they can make their work so personal and unique.

AGGS is Now a Host School!

Our school will now host Anti-Bullying training days for new ambassadors in Manchester!

On 9th May, Diana Award staff will be coming to AGGS and training young, excited and passionate students to help run the Anti-Bullying teams in their schools.

A number of Year 9 AGGS students were selected and will be participating in the training day, as well as students from other local schools.

We hope they enjoy the training and become amazing ambassadors for the school!

We also look forward to hosting many more training days for schools in Manchester!
