MUNHIGH MUN

MUNHIGH MUN

Students from year 10-12 attended the 6th MUNHIGH conference on sat 27th & Sun 28th Jan. The conference is a fantastic way to engage young people in political issues and explore international politics. The skills that the conference provides are invaluable and the students make lots of friends as they work with students from across Manchester, the UK and this year from all around the world.

A particular congratulations goes to Hedye for helping and translating for the Iranian international school who attended the conference. Manchester High School were particularly impressed with her attitude and selflessness to go out of her way to help others. This of course exemplifies everything the UN stands for 🙂

A huge well done to all the participants, everyone managed to speak and lots of awards were picked up this year, both commended and highly commended. Well Done 🙂

Brook – Gender Identity and Sexuality Workshops

Brook Gender and Sexuality workshop-1

On Monday year 8 had a session in the hall with the fantastic youth workers from Brook. The session considered and explored Gender Identity allowing students to engage in productive discussion about the issue and learn different terminologies and the importance of respecting others. The session also explored sexuality and the dangers of homophobia and transphobia and how this can make a person feel. The session was fantastic and year 8 seemed to gain a great deal from the activities and discussions.

Houses of Parliament Trip

Houses of Parliament tripThe first day back after the Christmas Holiday’s saw the Year 11 and year 10 GCSE Citizenship classes go down to London for the annual Houses of Parliament and Supreme Court trip. The day was full on and busy, however incredibly informative and lots of what we learnt linked to the GCSE course. The tours and workshops linked to our learning in Theme B and Theme C. A highlight was watching both the House of Commons and the House of Lords in session. The debates were relevant and some heated exchanges were made, we really saw democracy in action.

After a long day we walked from Westminster to Euston taking in more of the wonderful London sights including Downing Street and Trafalgar Square.

Digital Surgeries

Last week the Year 10 GCSE Citizenship group took part in an exciting new project with the Politics Project called Digital Surgeries. The group have worked through a series of lessons to find out more about the role of decision makers with the goal of speaking to them via Skype and putting their questions and ideas to these decision makers. This is a key part of involving young people in the process of politics and making their voices heard as active citizens.

Year 10 spoke to MEP Julie Ward. This was a fantastic opportunity to ask questions about Brexit and the future of the UK outside of Europe. The students also explored women’s rights and the rights of other citizens and how young people can get involved in politics.

This was a unique way for our students to share their views and opinions with a decision maker. Thank you to the Politics project for this fantastic opportunity. The Politics Society will be speaking to Beth Knowles on Friday exploring her role as Andy Burham’s Assistant and leading his Manchester Homelessness project. All students are welcome to join us.
