On Friday 7th September, Year 12 and 13 students studying English travelled to the Globe theatre in London to watch Shakespeare’s Othello. The play, performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company, tells the story of the Venetian general, Othello, and his relationship with his new wife, Desdemona. Corrupted by the evil Iago, Othello believes that Desdemona has been unfaithful to his, culminating in a violent murder at the end of the play which shocked those who weren’t prepared for it.
The play featured an all-star cast, including André Holland (Moonlight) as the eponymous tragic hero, and Oscar-winning actor Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, The BFG) as Iago.
It truly was an excellent performance, in the theatre where it would have first been performed more than 400 years ago, and the day was enjoyed by pupils and staff alike.
